What is this letter ‘Q’ in the corner of my iPhone’s phone app?

What is this?

Today I noticed this strange, half of a letter ‘Q’ in the upper left-hand corner of my iPhone 4. It only appears when I’m in the phone app, but it appears on every page of it. It has me completely bamboozled. Having googled it, I can find one other blog where this has been documented but there are no clear answers as to what it is or why it happens. Anyone else had this? Hit the comments! (More screenshots after the break).

OMG, me too. But now it’s gone. I saw this post earlier today, and I wasn’t affected, but when I got home tonight, there it was. And on the home screen too. 10 mins later, it’s gone. Weird. And annoying.

    I’m on 2degrees.

No, its not the QuickTime icon, it’s just a regular old ‘Q’.. Note that the tail of the ‘Q’ in my screenshot is flat, but the actual QuickTime logo has a pointed tail. You can see the QuickTime icon here: http://edibleapple.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/07/new-quicktime-icon.png

Never seen that before, IPhone 4 on Vodafone since launch day.
I suspect it may be carrier specific, possibly something to do with signal strength???

I’ve done a bit of searching about this mysterious “Q” and it seems like we’re not the only ones experiencing it…

    http://en.akihabaranews.com/57098/phones/another-iphone-4-bug-the-%E2%80%9Cghost%E2%80%9D-q-icon

They say it might be a bug, but nothing that will affect the usability of the iPhone.
Does a reset solve the issue?

You could alway remain open minded …. Maybe tonight on the news they announce “Cash Prizes, to people with Q’s in the upper left hand corners of their iPhone 4 Screens…” – I wouldn’t write the possibility off, I mean nobody else has a plausible answer to this mystery ……. :P

    @ themrx:
Yup, that’s the article that I link to in the story… a reset may well solve the issue but I don’t want it to go away until I know what it is! Sounds silly but I’m that intrigued…!

  11. mitch20 says:

Vodafone here as well 3G, 3GS and 4 never seen anything like it, Jailbroken or Not. Never been on another carrier however.

So a soft reset is not fixing it like the post you linked to?

Just a thought. Possibly apple testing a bit of code implanted into there software for advertising?!?

  13. Steve Lawrence says:

I believe a soft reset will fix it, but I don’t want to fix it until I know what it is! Also a long time iPhone owner and never seen anything like it either. It looks like the Q from the keyboard stuck on the screen to me… That could be all it is, just a weird bug. But was hoping someone might have the answer!

  14. canadianrob says:

I have the same problem from tine to time. It’s the ‘Q’ from you keypad from what I can gather.

I have the same problem from time to time. I’m in northern Canada on the telus network. It’s the ‘Q’ from you keypad from what I can gather. I just do a hard reset and it goes away.

I just discovered if you double tapp to app switcher and hold down on the txt msg app an close it the ‘Q’ goes away. It must be a glitch in the keypad in txt mode. Btw I’m running 4.2.1 on a iPhone 4.

    @ Steve:
Yeah working in IT fixing the problem is only half the issue.. knowing what’s causing it is often just as important. Its anecdotal but it seem only to be affecting non mainstrem carriers ?
