Apple have just sent out invites for this years WWDC (Worldwide Developer Conference) event in San Francisco. The dates to mark on your calendar are June 6th thru 10th (7th thru 11th in NZ time). The invite contains the text “Join us for a preview of the future of iOS and Mac OS X”, the latter of which was largely ignored at last year’s WWDC so Mac devs will be most pleased. Last year’s event saw the unveiling of the iPhone 4 however those hoping for something similar this year may be disappointed as rumours so far seem to be suggesting that no hardware announcements will be made with the focus firmly on software. It’s highly likely that we’ll see a lot more of OS X Lion and quite possible that we’ll learn more about iOS 5, but I guess we’ll find out soon enough. We’ll have all the coverage you need, of course, right here at iPhonewzealand.

June 2011 can’t come soon enough!!!!!
Oh well.. i will just remember to enjoy what I already have, which is a pretty awesome iPhone and iOS, and let the future happen whenever it happens, no matter how long it takes… because what matters is… now

I don’t think there really needs to b a major hardware refresh anyway.
Yeah they could put in bigger cameras, dual core, 3d etc but that’s not needed right now. I think Apple will do another innovative iOS refresh and harp on about Lion. They will also get stuck into “Music Locker” too I think.

I’m hoping for a Sept release of the next gen iPhone. My 3GS will be needing a refresh by then. I’ve just started saving in earnest for it. But what I’m really hoping for is a big leap in functionality. Much deeper integration between core elements and thirdparty apps. i.e.
1: when you start a navigation app it checks your diary to see where your next appointment might be;
2: when you are in a meeting marked ‘busy’ it mutes incoming calls;
3: when tones are played for incoming calls SMS etc it checks ambient noise and adjusts volume accordingly
4: ability to schedule profiles, (do this currently on sbsschedule as I am jailbroken)
5: ability to do callwaiting with sip voip / cellular calls

That, my friend, is genius. I am so sick of constantly having to adjust the ringer volume only to then miss a call the next time I’m in a loud environment because I had it down too low! Somebody get this man a job at Apple!
It wouldn’t be too hard for the ring volume to be linked to the orientation sensor, so it drops the volume when it’s in your hand (Ie tilted 30-60°), raises the volume when it’s in your pocket(vertical with proximity). Raises it when it’s been sitting faceup for an increasing amount of time(0° + log time since movement stopped or since locked). C’mon apple, inject a bit of smart into the smartphone!

Why couldn’t it be linked to the microphone?
