iOS 6 is Here

ios6

iOS 6 became available for download early this morning. After installing it on my iPhone I can tell you that patience is important.

Just like when iOS 5 arrived, a lot pf people are having problems downloading it. It took me two goes this morning on my iPhone. The first time I was trying to use applications at the same time and I dont think it liked it. So if your having problems, try what I did; change the auto screen lock to ‘never’ so you can watch it download and just be very patient. I would also recommend plugging the device into a charger.

Anyway, mine took almost an hour to complete, which is a little long. The wait was worth it though.

Having an iPhone 4, I was a little worried that I would miss out on some of the updates but it looks like the only thing really is the siri update.

My favourite and probably the biggest change in iOS 6 is the new maps. I previously used other map apps when driving because the old iPhone maps did not include turn by turn navigation which was up to my standards. I have not been for a drive yet but the maps app already looks very good.

Being able to use the app in landscape position is a significant improvement for me. It is now a lot easier and safer for me to find my location.

Another sneeky thing that I have just noticed is that you can now Tweet from the notification center. If you slide it down from the top of the screen a tweet box appears. Thats handy I suppose.

20120920-103712.jpgSafari has also had a little spruce up. You can now share via Facebook and the whole thing looks a lot better.

The app store has had some design upgrades and looks very impressive. The Genius tool has become the center option. I never use it but its not hiding anymore.

YouTube has just dissapeared which means that you need to download the new idependant YouTube app. Dont worry its a lot better than the old one anyway.

Most of the apps that come included in the iPhone have had small adjustments, some just a colour change.

The coolest change for me is the maps, just because I drive a lot. Once you download iOS 6, get into it and explore the new upgrades. I plan to install it on my iPad later.

Let me know how you feel about it.

Check out a full run down of the updates from Apple here

Edit: There is currently world wide problems connecting to wifi with iOS 6, hold fire on downloading it if this will effect you. Hopefully they will fix it soon

Once you have added your Facebook details into the settings page, you can also update Facebook from the notification center!

Has anyone had any luck finding any information on adding entries to Passbook?
I have found lots of third party sites that will let you create entries but no information on apple.com on how they believe the process should work

Easiest upgrade ever. I did my iPad first thing this morning, started the update over wifi before I got ready for work and it was done in less than an hour. I won’t be upgrading my iPhone 4 though, I’ll let whoever buys it decide if they want to do that or not.

no wifi problems on my iphone 4s (ipad still installing), BUT it does appear unstable and keeps restarting- white apple icon for 10-15secs then unlock screen. SEEMS to be whenever i touch/try to move one of the new apps like Passbook (which doesn’t appear to work in NZ)

I updated this morning on my 4S and have not had any issues with WiFi or any instability that Eediot mentions. Can’t say as I am keen on the new maps – have only had a brief look though as have been at work!

Found and installed the YouTube iphone app but there doesn’t appear to be an iPad one. Just took Maps for a drive and other than not being able to see how to edit an existing journey it worked brilliantly.

Anyone having issues getting Passbook to actually do anything? If I click on the ‘App Store’ button at the bottom I just get a message saying “Cannot Connect to the iTunes Store”. Actually going in via the iTunes store works fine.

    Weird/poor desgin

Having an iphone4 I have to say i am a little underwhelmed with ios6. No Siri, no spoken directions in maps. There are some good things but I guess I will have to wait for the iphone5 to get the full benefit.

@suburban_ennui I can’t get passbook to do anything either. Also get the ‘cannot connect to iTunes store’. Any solutions? e.g. I have the onegratis app that I thought might somehow xfer to passbook (for a coffee loyalty card)…but i can’t make it work.

The satellite map is not as good as the previous Google map. There’s large amount of cloud all over New Plymouth. Also, would be nice to let the map app be simply map without all the eateries and food outlets. Just zoom into the standard street map of Auckland and you’ll see what I mean.

Maps – What planet are you all on, the maps app is hopeless. For a start where I live (Tauranga) everything is black and white and when you zoom in on an area it is like looking thorough the bottom of an empty milk bottle. I clicked on an address in an email *** Waihi road (which I happened to be parked on just looking for the correct house number) and it bought up a Waihi road in KOREA! I have put a short cut to Google maps until they come out with their rumoured app (so long as Apple does not block it).

Yeah, maps is pretty crap. It was hopeless getting me ’round Takapuna the other day, and had to resort to Google Maps instead. A search for the shop The Department Store was hopeless in Maps, but Google got me there fine. I hope that the “it’s cloud-based and will get better once more people start using it” excuse is actually true, but given how long it takes for New Zealand information to get propagated into these sorts of databases, I can’t see it being super-usable for a while.

I ended up having to completely reinstall the update to get wifi to work, after trying about 10 different so-called “fixes”. Have done the time/date reset to try to get Passbook working, but it’s still intermittent.

Overall, this GM feels like a beta. First time I’ve ever felt really let down by an Apple software upgrade. Kinda considering downgrading …

The new iso 6 Panorama camera option on my 4s is great. I can see my self using this a lot and does work as it should, simple and easy to use.

Ive been using Tom-tom mapping on my iPad and iPhone for 3 years and it works great. I’ve never used Google mapping for getting around. I must say “finding my friends” Apple mapping is rubbish.

Hopefully it won’t be long for the Google mapping app, and I’m hoping I can then change all my mapping to google.

Google stuffed the relationship up with Apple by selling their own phones and going up against Apple.

Companies should stay with what they are good at.

Has anyone else noticed the App Store is terrible now. Especially searching.

The results take up a whole page each, which isn’t too bad. Scrolling through the results is the frustrating part, you flick across for the next one, and are forced to wait for the scroll animation to finish before you can can move to the next one.
It makes search nearly impossible to use.

Yeah the scrolling action is pretty bad; at times it doesn’t seem to work right either. I miss the infinite scrolling momentum of the old vertical format. AndrewNZ wrote:

I like the new App store. It’s fast viewing when scrolling and the bigger view of the apps is good.
