Although not officially announced the Telecom New Zealand’s official iPhone 5 launch details have fell into our lap tonight. No doubt they will announce this tomorrow but if you want to know where you need to be to grab one of these on launch day carry on reading.
The first thing we need to clarify is there will be absolutely no selling of the iPhone 5 on launch day to pre pay or buy outright customers. Launch day sales are for new contracts only. To confirm you need to be a brand new customer signing a 2 year plan OR an existing customer who is currently out of contract.
So where do you need to be? At 9am Friday morning all Telecom stores will be open for business as usual. HOWEVER there will be 3 stores opening at midnight 12:01am to launch the device. Those stores are:
Auckland – 167 Victoria Street
Wellington – 42 Willis Street
Dunedin – 101 George Street
That’s it folks. Unfortunately nothing for Christchurch at midnight.
So what do you think and where will you be on launch day? Will you be queuing at midnight or queuing for a 9am opening? One thing is for sure demand is going to be huge!
Let us know all your thoughts in the comments.
Update below with official word from TNZ. Christchurch will be getting a midnight launch.
Here is everything you need to know.
1. All Telecom stores will be open as usual from 9am selling the iPhone 5
2. 3 stores will open at 12:01 am to start selling the iPhone 5. They are:
167 Victoria Street, Auckland
42-52 Willis St, Wellington
Riccarton Mall store, Christchurch
3. Doors open at 12:01am
4. There is a limit of one handset per customer
5. Customers are encouraged to bring up to three guests on the night
6. 12 month plans, open term and pre-paid sales will not initially be available

Good score there Paul…pretty disappointed about no ChCh midnight launches. Hopefully it was just an omission by your source….can only dream haha. I went ahead and pre-ordered for pickup so REALLY hoping I can rock up at Midnight…pass all the queue and collect (ok now I really am dreaming)

Paul!
What about the apple stores!? What are their deals? I rang them up last week inquiring about the iphone 5. The guy said he had no idea till probably a couple days before the 28th. Do you know what they will be doing?

I pre-ordered mine for collection in store, I hope they have a separate pre-order queue. Do we know how many units Telecom got?

We don’t have unit numbers for Telecom. “Very Limited” is all we know for TNZ. With regards to Apple online also no info but we are guessing they will be online on Friday 28th early hours. The waiting time for delivery is anybody’s guess though.
Telecom still have stock online, whereas Vodafone are sold out. Telecom have only sold out of black 32gb – popular choice

Just checked back with Telecom and everything is sold out now.

Just had word from Telecom that they ARE doing a ChCh midnight launch as well…Riccarton will be the store. No pre-order pick ups though at that time (have to wait until 9 I guess)

Well have called Yoobee and JB Hifi, they too will only be selling iPhone 5 to new connections to VFNZ. No outright sales.

Rip of by telecommunication giants. I would order it online and wait for a week or two, rather than enrolling for 24 month contract.

Anyone has any words from Harvey Norman or Noel Leeming? Thanks

Called up Apple, met the consultants at yoobee and other stores, no one actually have any vital information. I am surprised to see the yooboo website, which does not have any advertisement or link with regards to the iPhone 5.

I find it hard to believe apple don’t have information. I’m not doubting what you’re saying, I think it’s just like all previous releases here it seems there’s a whole bunch of disregard for customers here.
it’s strange that in a country where phones are unlocked, you can’t get any info from he manufacturer themselves about when customers can buy an unlocked handset thy can then choose how they use. The US phones are locked still right? But apple has preorders for the handsets, as do VF and Telecom here now. Seems to me the telcos here hve far too much power for their size. That was demonstrated with the iP4 release fiasco and, if apple aren’t allowing preorders here now so that the telcos can have first pop at securing new contract customers, it seems to be happening again.
Apple ought to say screw the telcos, put the whole stock up on their own site, ship them out as early as possible to anyone who wants to buy
