The Secret is Out, How Do We Feel?

Apple iPhone 5So I am sure everyone has been buzzing over the Apple announcement yesterday morning, regarding the new iPhone 5, iOS 6 and iPod updates. The time zone difference worked perfectly for me, waking up early on my birthday to watch a perfect run down of the event from Ben.

Will you upgrade to an iPhone 5?

The most exciting thing is that iOS 6 will be available for download next Thursday New Zealand time. This means that we can play around with most of the new features before the release of the iPhone 5 in New Zealand on the 28th of September.

According to an article by Tom Pullar-Strecker, the iPhone 5:

“will carry a recommended retail price here of $1049 for the 16GB model, $1199 for the 32GB model and $1349 for the 64GB model”.

Obviously Vodafone and Telecom will come up with some plans which will make the handset somewhat cheaper. It will be interesting to see whether they stick with the existing plans or create a new set.

To be honest, I can not wait for the iPhone 5. The design of the handset looks so sleek and well created, I am going to have no problems upgrading from an iPhone 4. How do you feel about it? take the poll above and lets see what the consensus is, I am thinking it will be pretty one-sided.

Yep, I am still on the 4 & am definitely looking forward to upgrading. I’ll be buying my handset outright (always do) so I’m hoping Apple NZ have pre-ordering available online sooner than the 28th!

I was an iPhone 3Gs owner, my wife has an iPhone4 but I upgraded to a Galaxy S2 instead (when the iPhone4s was announced). I love my Galaxy S2 but have kept an open mind about returning to the iPhone. For what it’s worth the iPhone5 is not enough for me to return to the Apple fold. I’m a little disappointed that Apple didn’t push the envelope more on the design of the iPhone5 and I find iOS too closed and at times boring.

We had the iPhone 4, then the iPhone 4S. Personally, I think I’m going to wait until they do some kind of iPhone 5S, or whatever. I don’t really feel too much of a hype around this new iPhone at the moment. Also, it doesn’t really help that I was foolish enough to get locked into a two year contract with Telecom.

If they don’t have any intentions for an upgraded 5, then I guess I’ll probably wait around for 6, or at least until they’ve gotten the “first batch” of iPhone 5s out of the way… I wonder how smooth the initial release is really going to be.

I currently have a 4S and as it is getting most of the features that ios6 (unlike the 4 and 3GS) has I will be keeping it until the 5 is updated next year. Also I still have a year to go on my Telecom contract so not this time.

Tempted, I arrive in London early morning of the 21st so may chance my arm at one of the Apple stores there. Hopefully the I don’t have to queue for too long.

I have the 4S and I use it extensively with the TomTom car kit. I also make regular use of the VGA output accessory allowing me to connect my phone to data projectors at work. Sure I could use an adapter for the VGA output accessory – but that wouldn’t work with the car kit. This is the main reason I am holding off upgrading. The 4S works very well for what I want from it and until something comes along that well exceeds what I can currently do with the 4S and the accessories I already use very regularly I am holding off.

I’ve got a 4S. I’m still content with it and being jail broken and set up perfectly to how I want it I can’t justify getting a 5.

A family member is getting a 5, so I can’t wait to play with that.

Do you guys think Telecom will sell the iPhone 5 outright (no contracts)? Last year they did and I was glad I didn’t pre order because I literally just walked in the store and got me 1.

I’ll be upgrading to the iPhone 5 from my 3GS. Was meaning to get the 4S but wasn’t in a position to buy one until 6 months after launch, so decided to sweat it out until the 5.

I already sold my iPhone 4 about two weeks ago in preparation for the iPhone 5. Already going nuts missing it. Dad is getting me one from Singapore as its cheaper and comes carrier unlocked. I really didn’t want to get a plan here in NZ but I would have if I had no choice. So excited!

Oh, does anyone know when NZ carriers will be getting nano sims in. I’m currently on two degrees and would love to stay there.

Actually you can’t use the lightning to 30-pin adapter for video output (see the description on the Apple Store; it also mentions not supporting “iPod Out”, which refers to a somewhat rare feature of car systems for replicating the display of an iPod). Apple will need to release new VGA and HDMI adapters for use with the iPhone 5 and 5th gen iPod Touch.

I have an iPhone 3GS and it is time to upgrade, so I’m intending to get an iPhone 5.

Re ZoeLou’s question about nano SIMs: Vodafone says they will have them available when devices that use them go on sale. Based on their policy for micro/multi SIMs I’m expecting it will be possible to swap an existing SIM for a nano SIM and get your account/prepay details transferred across, but there is the possibility of limited stocks for early buyers. New accounts or prepay plans should be able to get a nano SIM on request rather than a mini/micro/multi SIM.

Telecom’s web site hasn’t mentioned nano-SIMs yet, but they say they will be selling the iPhone 5 from September 28, which implies they must have at least nano-SIMs for the phones they are selling.

According to what I’m reading on the net, if you’re wanting to get an iphone 5 on a prepaid plan, then you’re going to be shit out of luck. Telecom aren’t offering it, at least not to begin with, and they won’t say when they will be. Pissing me off. Our money is not as good as the people wanting a plan?
