The TVNZ OnDemand online service has been around for a few years and it has been great. TVNZ is now looking to move with the times and create an OnDemand app for iPhone and other smartphones.
Yes, there already is a TVNZ app but it is centered around One News and includes the television schedules. This app however is a completely different story, the OnDemand app will allow you to stream TVNZ content from your iPhone or iPad.
TVNZ believes that almost 50% of the population has a smart phone (wow!), but being able to stream television on a smart phone will be a big step.
To make it all happen, TVNZ has partnered up with Brightcove, a company which currently delivers the online TVNZ OnDemand content.
TVNZ OnDemand is where you can catch up on anything that you have missed or want to watch again from any TVNZ channel. The planned app will provide the same service to your smartphone.
According to the Herald, Shortland Street is by far the most popular show watched OnDemand…Come on New Zealand, really?
TVNZ’s general manager of digital media Tom Cotter told stuff.co.nz that they will be the first commercial broadcaster in Australasia to deliver on-demand TV content to smartphones and tablets.
Since 2007 when the TVNZ OnDemand service became available, the number of views has increased each year, Tom Cotter said that this years average weekly streams have been up 42 per cent from last year. This significant increase in the amount of views and people using the online version certainly justifies making a smartphone app.
The app will be available on iPhone, iPad, Android and the Samsung Smart TV, covering a huge amount of the market.
Rival broadcaster TV3 is never too far behind TVNZ so I wouldn’t be surprised if they brought out an OnDemand smartphone app out shortly after. If TV3 leave it too long, they will miss out on a huge amount of viewers.
Not being able to watch the OnDemand content from my iPad or iPhone has always bugged me a little, this app will be a big game changer. lets hope it lives up to my expectations.
