Kiwi App Review & Give Away: AnimalBlocks for iPad

Great fun with AnimalBlocks

We get asked to review a lot of apps here at iPhonewzealand and I have to say that I have had some great fun with my daughter showing her the latest app from kiwi devs Flightless whilst I’ve been reviewing it. She is of an age where she can’t spell yet, but enjoys sounds, animals and sparkly things on the screen. In fact this is the first app I have reviewed where I have used her to play with it and it’s been great fun watching her reaction. As I say she can’t spell yet but with a little help from her Dad she was soon clapping when the app sparkled telling her we had the letter in the right place. Keep reading to see more about AnimalBlocks the great new app from the devs at Flightless and see how you can win yourself one of two copies.…

Get Ready, Get Thru with a little help from your iPhone

Get Ready Get Thru

Approximately 6 months ago Steve wrote a post on the site titled How my iOS devices helped us in the quake and how they could save your life. As I sit here writing this I find it hard to believe that I would have ever been typing a post (let alone a second one on the site) about how you can ‘Get Ready’ and ‘Get Thru’ a natural disaster such as an earthquake (with a little help from your iPhone).…

Now the guys at 1-Night.co.nz have released their iPhone app so join me as we take a look to see if they have taken their ticketing technology to the latest gadget.…

iOS 4.3 iPad gestures available for all (Mac users)… kinda

Gestures switch

Back when iOS 4.3 was released gestures were introduced for the iPad. Then when beta 2 was released Apple confirmed those gestures were only to be available for Developers and they would not make an appearance in the final release of 4.3. FTW: White iPhone to be available ‘this spring’

Story via engadget

Whoa, Nelly. Ready for another round? The elusive white iPhone — spotted only in the hands of Woz and occasionally in those of our own Richard Lai — may ship after all. After hearing from Apple that it was being delayed twice in 2010, we’ve heard an extended radio silence ever since. Sure, we’ve seen hints here and there from third parties that this here unicorn was still making its way through the production line, but there’s nothing quite like a direct tweet from Cupertino’s senior vice president of worldwide product marketing to really rekindle some interest. In response to a question on how to obtain a white iPhone, Philip Schiller fired back: “The white iPhone will be available this spring (and it is a beauty!).” That’s about as clear-cut as it gets for now, but we’ve still got a few inquiries we’d love answered. Is he talking about the iPhone 4, or the next one in the pipeline? And does he have any intention of building us up, only to let us down (let us down) once more? We shall see, won’t we?

FTW: Additional Password Protection for In-App Purchases

Story via Gigaom

In an apparent attempt to quell concerns from parents, regulators and legislators, Apple has moved to require password entry on every in-app purchase, closing a 15-minute grace period that some children used to inadvertently rack up pricey charges of virtual goods. The latest update to its iOS software 4.3 will now include the requirement, which Apple hopes will add further protections against unwanted purchases.

FTW: Apple TV update causing screen flicker issues

Story via engadget

We’ve seen reports of strange video behavior with Apple TVs before, and it looks like a new problem has now cropped up with the most recent update. According to a growing number of reports on the Apple support forums, those using an HDMI to DVI adapter to connect the device to their TV seem to have been hit with an annoying issue that causes their screen to flicker every few seconds. That’s apparently happening with a wide range of TVs, and at least some are also reporting the same thing happening even if they aren’t using an adapter. A few folks have apparently been able to fix things in the interim by simply pulling their HDMI cable and plugging it back in, but most are stuck with the annoying issue — or worse, a downgraded 480p signal. Having some similar issues? Let us know in comments.
