Announcement: iPhonewzealand is closing
With heavy hearts, the time has come for us to announce that we’re going to be closing iPhonewzealand as at 20th February, 2012. With some help from contributors along the way, we (Dan and Steve) have run the site with every ounce of the spare time that we have been able to sacrifice outside of our normal jobs and family lives. At times this has been quite gruelling, especially around the launch of new devices, so it’s fair to say that this action is also due to a desire to free up some of that precious time.
We’ve been operating since July 2009, back when the device was relatively new and had official support with only one mobile operator in New Zealand, so there was a need for a site like ours to help people get connected on other networks. Dan’s legendary carrier bundles made it possible for people to get going on the network of their choice quickly and easily.
We also helped spread the word about local apps and developers, keeping the ever-growing kiwi user-base up-to-date with news and reviews as an explosion of ‘big name’ kiwi apps such as TradeMe, Stuff and TVNZ hit the App Store.
As of now, new registrations to the site are closed. The site will continue to be here for a while, but with no further updates after this post. If you need to, you can get hold of us via the ‘Contact Us’ link until the site is taken down (in the event that it is not sold), or via our Twitter presence, @iphonewzealand, which will remain open (but mostly inactive) for a period of time.
We welcome any expressions of interest into buying the site or offers from anybody who might like to shower us with cash so that we can do this for a living — please feel free to get in touch with us via the ‘contact us’ button on the header of the site.
Steve Jobs once said that he just wanted to “put a ding in the universe”. That goes for us too, and we hope that on a much tinier scale we managed to do that.
All the best
Steve and Dan…

Another year is quickly coming to an end and today is the last day for us before the Christmas break. We are going to be away for the Christmas and New Year breaks, but to all our readers, we’d like to extend our heart-felt wishes for a very Merry Christmas for you and all your families and a wonderful new year.
2011 really has been another fantastic (if not shaky) year for us and we really appreciate all the continued support you’ve given us. The positive feedback and support we’ve had throughout the year is what keeps us going, and we’ve really enjoyed giving something back to the kiwi iPhone community.
We’ll be raising our glasses in your honour and are really looking forward to 2012 and we hope you’ll be with us when we’re back in full swing in the new year!
Have a good one!…

Like many of you, we foolishly hoped that this day would never come. His departure is a massive loss not just to Apple but the entire industry. Read MoreSteve Jobs resigns as Apple CEO, Tim Cook to take the helm
Considering Steve Jobs’ health over the past few years you would think this wasn’t too suprising and that we’d be expecting it, none-the-less, in what is still considerably shocking and very sad news Steve Jobs has just submitted his resignation as CEO of Apple and the board has anounced Tim Cook will take the helm as CEO (as per the the Apple succession plan).
It’s not all bad news though and Steve isn’t quitting completely. In the meantime he will serve as Chairman of the Board, Director and an employee of Apple.
Below is his letter of resignation and the Apple Press Release after the break.
Resignation Letter:
Read MoreTo the Apple Board of Directors and the Apple Community:
I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple’s CEO, I would be the first to let you know. Unfortunately, that day has come.
I hereby resign as CEO of Apple. I would like to serve, if the Board sees fit, as Chairman of the Board, director and Apple employee.
As far as my successor goes, I strongly recommend that we execute our succession plan and name Tim Cook as CEO of Apple.
I believe Apple’s brightest and most innovative days are ahead of it. And I look forward to watching and contributing to its success in a new role.
I have made some of the best friends of my life at Apple, and I thank you all for the many years of being able to work alongside you.
Steve

Competition: Win a 32GB WiFi iPad 2 with thanks to Vonage – Closed
UPDATE: This competition has now closed. We are currently going through your awesome entries and we’ll let you know who has won once we know.
UPDATE 2: The competition was won by MrGadget who has been notified via email. Thanks to all our entrants and congratulations to MrGadget!
As we mentioned the other day, we’ve teamed up with Vonage to celebrate the launch of their Time to Call app by giving away a shiny new 32GB WiFi iPad 2 to one lucky reader (although we originally had to pull out the folks at Vonage have been amazing and have made it possible for us to run it).
All you need to do to enter is hit the comments of this post and tell us in 500 characters or less the following: if you had 15 minutes to call anyone past, present or future, who would you call and what would you talk to them about?
Your answer can be serious or funny, fact or fiction, so get creative and get writing.…
Read MorePlease give a warm welcome to our new writers
As you may know, quite a few weeks ago we advertised for additional writers for the site. We had a number of fantastic applications and we’d like to say thanks to everyone that applied. Yet again it was quite humbling to see all the kind words that were written about the site within the applications, so thanks again.
In the end we decided to take on three more new writers, this was for three reasons, 1. we couldn’t decide between them and 2. the more writers we have means the more posts we have and 3. Allan and Andy have both left our writing team to peruse other ventures, leaving space for three.
Hit the ‘read more’ for an introduction to the three new writers.…
Read MoreWe’re teaming up with Vonage to give away an iPad 2
To celebrate the launch of Vonage’s Time to Call app, we’re joining top kiwi tech blogs Geekzone and ben.geek.nz as well as dozens of international sites to each give away a shiny new 32GB WiFi iPad 2. Geekzone’s competition is running right now and we’ll be running our competition from 16th to 20th August, so check back then for the full details. In the meantime head on over to callsfromsmartphone.com to check out the full schedule for all the other competitions. We can’t wait to kick off the competition for the most exciting prize we’ve ever had to give away to one of our lucky readers, so we hope you’ll join us on August 16th.
UPDATE: Great News! The fantastic folks at Vonage have agreed to let us run the competition for New Zealand residents only and have agreed to us blocking international traffic. You may be thinking “wtf, you are blocking international traffic?!?” but we have to to keep the costs down. If we leave it open whilst the competition is running it could cost us a fortune. Anyway… head over to this post to check the competition out.
With much regret, we are having to cancel our involvement in this promotion. As this is a globally-promoted competition, the cost of receiving the international traffic that it would attract would cripple us financially. Apologies to all.…

Read MoreiPhonewzealand: More writers needed – closed
You may have noticed that the site has been pretty quiet on the post front just lately. Unfortunately Steve and I are extremely busy with our 9-to-5 jobs (as are Paul and Mak) and with everything happening in Christchurch at the moment it is likely to be like this for some time. We want to keep the site going and keep the site as fresh as possible and having stories on the front page that have been there a week or more is not something we want but is something that is becoming far more frequent.
So to try and alleviate some of the pressure we have decided to see if there are any of you that would like to write with us.
Now, the first thing to know is that unfortunately we can’t offer payment. We currently make just enough to pay for hosting so you will mainly be doing this for the love of writing, and it could be a great opportunity for somebody looking to simply gain some experience for a longer-term goal.
We are looking for enthusiastic and passionate iPhone, iPod touch or iPad users (to write for us you must own at least one of these products) to write news, reviews and interesting opinion pieces for us.
UPDATE: Thanks all – We have had a number of people contact us and we are going through them now. We’ll be in touch shortly if you applied.…

Read MoreGrab our new iPhone app and donate to the NZ Red Cross Earthquake Appeal
We have just launched our second iPhone app in the App Store, which provides feeds from our site and iPhone settings for every NZ carrier, among other things. We are charging for this app so that we can give something back to the people of Christchurch following Tuesday’s deadly quake. The App is priced at $2.59 until the end of March and all proceeds from our cut of the sales will go to the NZ Red Cross (30% will still go to Apple, which we cannot avoid). Why not download it now to give to the Canterbury Earthquake Appeal.
Remember you are not paying for the app itself, you are paying to donate to the NZ Red Cross.…
