App Review: Whitcoulls eBook reader and store [gallery]

Whitcoulls Icon

I don’t know, you wait around forever for a decent eBook reader with a store that actually works in New Zealand and what do you know – two turn up at once. Apple’s iBooks app has been drawing ever closer and tantilising the taste-buds of gadget-centric book fiends the length of breadth of the country, but look! Here comes Whitcoulls, completely out of the blue, crashing the party early and ready to nick your pocket money! Ready to go hands-on? Hit the link.…

Well, that sure came from nowhere! Available immediately on the App Store is the new Whitcoulls eBook reader and store. The app is free, comes with 5 free classics already loaded, and at first glance pricing of books seems to be reasonable (average is around $15). iWork and iBooks apps now available on NZ iTunes App Store

Go get 'em!

Well it seems that after all that teasing, Apple is finally throwing us a bone today! The iWork apps for iPad (Pages, Keynote and Numbers) as well as the iBooks app are all now available for purchase via the NZ iTunes / App Store. Sure, you can’t do an awful lot with them until that sweet slab of tablety goodness is in your hands, but there’s something satisfying about knowing that you’ve got some quality apps sat ready to go. The iWork apps are priced at $13.99 each which might seem expensive on the surface, but these are fully-fledged productivity apps which cost $179 in their Mac incarnation. iBooks is, of course, free.…

Apple continues to tease NZ with broken links

Pre-order iPad button in NZ Store

Oh, Apple! Why do you continue to tease us so!? Now a ‘pre-order’ button is appearing in the NZ iTunes Music Store that leads to nothing but a dead link. It’s like they’re laughing at us! (OK, melodrama aside: Apple, please stop doing this!). [/rant].

There was also a note on one blog that the iBook store is now live everywhere. I hate to burst that bubble as well but it’s not and neither are the iWork apps. It’s only available to those that are getting the iPad in the first international roll-out (i.e. UK, Australia, France, Germany, Japan, Canada, Switzerland, Spain, and Italy). We will let you know as soon as it is available here.…

2degrees announces 50MB data bundle and $10 text

2degrees announcement

Until now, 2degrees’ mobile offering has been somewhat of a cruel mistress for iPhone users – attractive calling rates, but expensive data caps (50c per MB) and 2G speeds. Well, something had to change and this afternoon, one of these issues has been addressed in an announcement made by the company via a press event in Auckland. Available immediately are two new optional packages – a 50MB data plan and a $10 text bundle. Yes folks, 2degrees finally just became a serious option for iPhone users – but does it stack up against the other players?…

2degrees poised to make mobile data statement

2degrees

2degrees Mobile have been in touch today to let us know they are going to be holding a ‘press event’ tomorrow at midday at 4pm today. It is to be held at their head office in Auckland and they will be making a statement regarding “mobile data”. All we know at this stage is that it is not related to the launch of their 3G network, which is scheduled for later this year.

We can only speculate as to what will be announced – perhaps plans or cheaper casual rates but as soon as the press release is available we’ll post the details here.

What do you think 2degrees will announce? Let us know in the comments below.

MobileMe Mail Beta hints at new direction for OSX or shift in priorities at Apple

MobileMe

Today I got my invite for the beta version of the new MobileMe Mail interface, and it speaks volumes about where Apple is at right now. Until now, MobileMe Mail (and all other facets of the service) have had a distinctly OSX look and feel. Even while stuck at work on lowly Windows PCs, Mac-heads could escape from it all and pretend that they were using OSX, if only for a minute, by logging in to their MobileMe account through any web browser.

So it’s interesting that the new beta service turns its back on all those OSX icons and instead brings a look and feel that is distinctly iPhone OS inspired. In fact, it’s the spitting image of the iPad’s Mail app.…

iOS 4 Wallpapers

New Wallpapers in OS4

After installing OS 4 beta 4 and having a look around I noticed Apple has added a number of new wallpapers for users to choose from, all of which are relatively clean so as not to distract from your app icons. I thought I would grab the new wallpapers and post them up in case anyone wants to install them on their pre-OS4 device.

To install them select your favourite and tap and hold to save it to your device. From there you can set it as your wallpaper.

Enjoy.…

UPDATED: Un-metered Facebook access coming to Telecom XT… just not for smartphones.

Free Facebook

Facebook has just announced a partnership with 50 mobile operators worldwide to provide un-metered Facebook access via a newly-developed portal 0.facebook.com, and in New Zealand that partnership will be with Telecom. The portal appears to be a stripped-down offering that delivers core content such as status updates, but not things like photos etc.

No date is given for the New Zealand launch, other than ‘soon’. We’ve asked Telecom for comment, and we’ll let you know if any more details are available when we get them.

UPDATE 21/05/10. The service is now live, however visiting the page from your iPhone will result in a completely blank page. Telecom has confirmed that the service will not be available for smartphones, including the iPhone. Ho hum.

Hit the ‘read more’ for a link to the full lowdown from the Facebook Blog, and let us know what you think in the comments.…
