iOS 4.3 Personal Hotspot… is it any good?
As you may or may not have read, iOS 4.3 comes with a new feature called “Personal Hotspot” which, simply put, creates a personal wi-fi hotspot for you to use anywhere you have your iPhone. It also replaces/updates the Tethering option. ‘Tethering” is no longer available per se, instead it now all comes under the one umbrella.
The question is, is it any good? The short answer is “Yes”, medium answer, “Yes, it is awesome” but keep reading for the long version, my reasons why and the downlow on what you need to do to get it working.…

Read MoreiOS 4.3 beta 3 available now
Apple’s 3rd update in just about as many weeks to their latest beta iOS (iOS beta 4.3) has just dropped and is ready for download (if your are a dev). What changes does it bring? At this stage we are unsure but once it’s down and installed we’ll be sure to update you. Hopefully Skype now works (unlikely though).
The update is available for all devices running iOS betas including iPhone (3GS/4), iPad, iPod touch (3rd/4th gen) and Apple TV.
Have you installed it? Found anything new or improved? Then hit the comments.
Update 1: The first of the changes has come in (although it’s a 4.3 thing not a beta 3 thing): You can now cancel app downloads midway through [via review of the Apple TV.. and although a little buggy (occasionally quits back to the Apple TV main menu) at least it is now here and I am sure by the time 4.3 is public it will work perfectly. Read MorePoor Vodafone coverage at your place? Fix it at your expense with a Sure Signal femtocell
It’s hard to know whether to congratulate or criticize Vodafone for this one: it’s either a genius marketing ploy to have Vodafone customers patch up the network’s short-falls at their own expense, or it’s a radical and empowering idea that gives customers the freedom to live wherever the heck they like and still enjoy full signal bars. Yes, Vodafone have finally begun rolling out Femtocells in New Zealand. Stick with me for the low-down.…
Read MoreParliamentary Services finally trialling access to iPhones and iPads
After initially banning the use of iOS devices in parliament due to somewhat questionable logic, it would seem that the Parliamentary Service have finally seen sense and is now carrying out a trial allowing access to iPhones and iPads according to a report on stuff.co.nz this morning.…
Read MoreWhat is this letter ‘Q’ in the corner of my iPhone’s phone app?
Today I noticed this strange, half of a letter ‘Q’ in the upper left-hand corner of my iPhone 4. It only appears when I’m in the phone app, but it appears on every page of it. It has me completely bamboozled. Having googled it, I can find one other blog where this has been documented but there are no clear answers as to what it is or why it happens. Anyone else had this? Hit the comments! (More screenshots after the break).…

Thirsty? Don’t worry: Flightless have you covered with their new app What Cocktail?. All you need to do is fire up this little kiwi-made app, tell it what mood you’re in and shake your iPhone, although you might want to stop doing that once you’ve had a few. The app will then dispense some mixological advice (is that even a word? It is now.)…
Read MoreKiwi App Review: Top Dog will make you appreciate sheep dogs
I’ll be completely honest: when Wellington-based Flightless asked us to review a sheep-herding game called Top Dog, I wasn’t expecting much. Being very much an urbanite, I shun Country Calendar and if I venture too far out of the city I start to convulse uncontrollably until I’m within spitting-distance of concrete again. So, with that in mind I’m very surprised to report that I’m completely addicted! Why? Read on.…

Read MoreWiFi Hotspot coming in next iOS update?
As predicted, Verizon have just announced the launch of a CDMA iPhone 4, and while there’s nothing of much interest in that for anybody outside of the US, what is of note is that the demo unit shown-off was running iOS 4.2.5 which had a WiFi hotspot option tucked away inside the Settings app, allowing it to share its mobile data connection with any other WiFi-enabled device in the vicinity. While no such assurances were made at the announcement, there’s a good chance that this feature could make its way to non-CDMA iPhones once that version of iOS is rolled out. Fingers crossed!…
Read MoreWhy you shouldn’t get too excited about the rumoured CDMA iPhone announcement
In case you haven’t heard, it’s widely believed that Verizon is set to announce this coming Wednesday (NZT) that they are to offer the iPhone, breaking the monopoly that AT&T have enjoyed on the device in the US since the launch of the original model in 2006. Since Verizon is a CDMA network, many of you still hanging on to Telecom’s old network (which was also CDMA) may well be thinking, “so does this mean that I can use a Verizon iPhone on Telecom?” Well, unfortunately the answer is “no” and here’s why.…

Read MoreVoBack replacement iPhone 4 backs, available right here in New Zealand
Back in December we posted a quick look at a silver back that Dan had bought for his iPhone 4. It caused quite a stir as the back is unexpectedly easy to replace and the ability to customise is certainly appealing – from the comments we can see that quite a few of you went off and bought one. We were then contacted by a Christchurch-based company called VoBack who offer similar backs, and they were kind enough to supply us with some samples. Let’s take a look at how the iPhone 4 can be transformed with a bit of colour and texture!…
