As reported on a number of other international sites today iTunes Match (the service that makes your entire iTunes music library available in the cloud) has been coming on and offline for most of the day for countries outside the U.S.

We have just taken a look ourselves and it would appear that whilst it is accessible to New Zealand we may be having the same issues as well. It’s possible that it going live is just a mistake or it could be that the servers are getting hammered. Either way at the moment even though we get a confirmation email to say we have subscribed it is erroring and asking us to sign out and in again. Once you have done that and you go back to your account it does say that you have a subscription and it will expire in a years time, but as yet I cannot get to the iTunes Match tab to actually use the service.

I am not sure I have been this excited about a beta in some time. Normally they come and go and eventually you get your GM release. But this one had me at hello.

iOS 5.1 beta 2 is available for developers now and with it comes the ability to delete/remove individual photos from iCloud’s Photo Stream, something that I, and many others, feel should have been there from day one.

The update is available for all the usual suspects, iPhone (4, 4S and 3GS), iPad (1 and 2), iPod touch (3rd and 4th gen) and also the Apple TV 2. Keep reading for more or head over to the developer site to download.

If you’re a photographer, then you know that a cable release is a tool to take a picture without touching your camera. Now, the iPhone can do this, too.

iOS 5 introduced many new features for photographers. Among these is the ability to use the Volume up button to take photos. As a result, the Volume up button on your headphones also works to take photos! It seems perfectly obvious that it should after the fact, but it’s not something most of us are likely to try.

Apple have today released iOS 5.1 beta to the development community for testing. Along with it they have also released Xcode 4.3 beta which is required if you are wanting to develop and test your applications with iOS 5.1 devices.

According to reports there are a number of bug fixes and changes in this release including references to an iPad 3 and a new “geofencing” setting that apparently stops battery drain in the Reminders app when it’s not in use.

That’s right, NZiDev is back for another year [NZiDev 2.0] but this time it promises to be bigger and better than ever and it’s coming to Auckland on the 3rd and 4th of December.

iOS 5.0.1 goes live… promises to fix battery woes and more

This morning iOS 5.0.1 has gone live to the public and according to the release notes, among other things, will fix battery issues from iOS 5 and will improve voice recognition for dictation with an Australian accent. iOS 5 available now…Go Go Go!!

Finally the day has come… iOS 5 is available for the general population to download. The update is available now via iTunes for iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPod touch 3rd and 4th gen, iPad, iPad 2, and Apple TV 2.

There’s a whole raft of new features (over 200 of them), too many for us to go through, but below is a list of the main ones (via Apple). We thought we’d leave it up to you guys to tell us what you think, what you’ve found, what you like and what you dislike. So hit the comments below and let us know what you think of the new features and what’s your favourite.

iTunes in the cloud now available from New Zealand store

Amongst other updates that are coming with iCloud, Apple has quietly updated the iTunes Store on iOS 5 to now allow for iTunes in the Cloud, meaning the music you purchase in iTunes appears automatically on all your devices and you can also download your past iTunes purchases.

It needs to be activated by going to “Settings >> Store” and then you will see that under Automatic downloads there is now a Music option. This will likely already be there once you download iOS 5 if you are not a dev and don’t currently have it. Once you have done that you will see purchases in the iTunes app and you will be able to download your pas purchases.

Unfortunately iTunes Match is still only available for U.S account holders. Image gallery after the break…

iTunes 10.5 now available

iTunes 10.5 is now out of beta and available to download. It seems a bit hit-and-miss as to whether it will pop up on Software Update but going to itunes.com seems to be the best source. The download weighs in at 103MB and you should grab it now in preparation for iOS 5 and all the goodness that has to offer. Enjoy!

Kiwi App Preview: TradeKiwi Photo Uploader

A few weeks ago I reviewed the new iteration of the official Trademe app. As you may recall, I gave it very good marks overall, but did cite some missing features. One of the features that went unmentioned was the ability to combine multiple photos and upload them to your account. So unless you could use Photoshop you were in for multiple picture fees.

However, stress not! There is an app for that, at least there will be soon, thanks to Chewy Applications. Let’s take an exclusive look at TradeKiwi which will hit the marketplace soon.

iOS 5 beta 7 (and more) available now

Go get it devs! (and probably a lot of non-devs)…. Apple has just released iOS 5 beta 7, iTunes 10.5 beta 7, Apple TV Software beta 6 and Xcode 4.2 Developer Preview 7.

You can download iOS 5 beta 7 for all the usual suspects (iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPad, iPad 2 or iPod touch 4th and 3rd gen) as an OTA delta update (70.9MB) or via the developer centre.

TradeMe app updated, finally able to add new listings

Back in November last year we had an exclusive hands on preview with the TradeMe app when it first launched. In May, we wrote that it was time for more features. Now, almost a year after the initial release, TradeMe have released a new update, with the usual bug fixes, but also a critical functionality update… In-app listing has arrived!

Snowstorms, earthquakes and tornadoes: mother nature just keeps throwing curve-balls at New Zealand this year and there’s no telling when she’ll do it again. All of these events cause massive disruption for not just people but businesses too and a study by LogMeIn shows that up to 68% of small businesses and 32% of corporates are unprepared to deal with events that could cause loss of access to the office. If you’re reading this blog it’s a fair bet to say that you own at least one iOS device, so keep reading and make sure that you’re tooled up to avoid being part of these statistics.

iOS 5 beta 6 now available to developers

Apple has seeded iOS 5 beta 6 to developers this morning, along with iTunes 10.5 beta 6. The update is available as either a full download or OTA delta update (which appears to be nice and easy this time around, unlike beta 5) and appears to be a bug-fix release rather than one that adds any major new functionality.

App Review: Quota

Most people have heard of Consume by now, in fact we did a review of it when it first came out. It has become the industry standard usage app for the iOS. However Bjango has not updated it for sometime and is not natively iPad compatible, which is leading to a clunky and rather utilitarian UI.

However, there is now a new kid on the block. Quota (by SouthFreo) may be new, but it is sleek, sexy and worth a look.

App review: Time to Call by Vonage

You’d be forgiven for thinking that most of the innovation to be done in VOIP apps had already been done, but US-based Vonage has other ideas. A few days ago Vonage announced their new Time to Call app and to be completely honest I ignored the press release as my understanding of Vonage was that they were a US company providing services to US customers only. That’s not so with this app, which is a truly innovative VOIP solution that can be used in New Zealand and is a god-send in both terms of convenience and cost-of-use when travelling not just overseas but even within NZ.

iOS 5 beta 5 now available with slightly messy OTA option

Apple has release beta 5 of iOS 5 to developers this morning which can be applied as either a full build or an OTA delta update. The OTA update for beta 4 was incredibly convenient, but it’s a different story for beta 5 as in order to begin the update you’ll need to head into the Settings menu and erase and reset all of the content on your device. Icky! There’s also a new iTunes 10.5 beta to go with it. Have fun!

No aliases or ability to add additional mail account into iCloud mail?

Unless this is just a beta thing, there is no ability to add either aliases to your free @me.com email address under iCloud or add an additional POP mail account. In MobileMe, users could add aliases (additional @me.com addresses that all share the same inbox) and also add another account via POP3 (e.g. mail from your old ISP account). In the above screenshot of the preferences panel from iCloud mail, there was a ‘+’ button in MobileMe where the red square has been drawn.

You can see a screenshot of the MobileMe counterpart with the additional ‘+’ after the break. It’s possible that since this is a free service Apple have decided to cut out some of the whistles and bells, or it could just be that this is to be added at a later date. After all, this panel is kind of pointless unless you can actually add other accounts or aliases. What do you think?Read More

Apple triples the length of song previews on NZ iTunes store

Apple has rolled out ninety-second song previews on the iTunes Store here in New Zealand, along with several other territories including Australia, Canada and the UK. This triples the amount of a song you can listen to before buying and makes it far easier to get a feel for the complete track. Thirty seconds was never really enough and previews would often cut off just before the chorus, leaving you in doubt as to whether you actually like it or not. The change is live now and affects both iTunes for Mac / PC as well as the iTunes app on iOS devices. It follows the same change being made to the US iTunes store in December of last year.

Well that went fast, I can’t believe it is time for a new beta! Hot on the heels on multiple other updates Apple have released iOS5 beta 4 for download. Reports are coming in that it is a really slow download however it has dropped pretty quickly for us.

Those of you that are a paid developer can sign in with your Apple developer ID and download this here, but you already knew that.

Note: The Apple TV has remained at beta 3 whilst all others have been updated to beta 4.

Apple announced last week that it would begin offering volume purchasing for iOS apps, and a week later the program is open for enrollment (but still U.S.-only, unfortunately). Enrolling in the program requires that you be authorized to make purchases for your company, and you’ll also need a valid D-U-N-S number.

Volume purchasing allows businesses an alternative to the App Store for bulk purchases of iOS apps. All paid apps in the App Store are available through the program, at the same price as that listed in the App Store. Note that Apple’s guide to the program doesn’t mention anything about discounts for bulk app purchases, so purchasing Keynote for all 50 of your employees is going to run you close to US$500.

iOS 4.3.4 available now, attempts to stop Jailbreak and fails

Yesterday Apple released iOS 4.3.4 in an attempt to close the hole on the PDF exploit that is used by the JailbreakMe jailbreak, and this is literally all it is for. As per the image above the only thing listed in the update notes is that it “Fixes security vulnerability associated with viewing malicious PDF files”. More details on the update can be found on the Apple support site.

The update is for iPad, iPod touch (3rd generation), iPhone 4, iPod touch (4th generation), iPhone 3GS and is a pretty quick download and update. So plug your iDevice in, fire up your iTunes and get updating.

iOS 5 puts a newsreader in your pocket

One of the lesser-discussed but frankly downright amazing additions to iOS 5 is the addition of a new ‘speak selection’ option which will literally read out any selected text in an incredibly life-like newsreader-style voice. From a cheap-thrills perspective, this is a great novelty addition that will provide a few giggles (yes, it will read out swear words, too), from a more sober point of view it can work as a great convenience tool (by reading your emails for you as walk to work), and from a perspective that the lucky majority of us will never need to consider, this will be an absolute life-line for the visually impaired.

Slightly later than the usual 2 week beta cycle, Apple just a few minutes ago released iOS 5 beta 2 to developers. Despite rumors, this is a regular download and not the first over the air software update some were expecting. So Apple got yet another patent granted today, and now there’s yet another media firestorm over whether it means Cupertino will be able to sue every other phone manufacturer out of business, or at least out of the business of making multitouch devices. And, as usual, most of the hysteria is based on a fundamental misinterpretation of what the patent claims actually say, and what behaviors they actually cover in iOS. I don’t know why we keep repeating this sad cycle, but I do know that it’s always, always better for us to read the claims and try to figure them out for ourselves — and in this case, they’re actually pretty narrow.
