Yahoo!’s new mail web app for iPhone is amazing
Yeah, that’s right: I said amazing. Once the leader of the web, expectations of Yahoo! have slipped in recent years, and it’s not often that we get excited about any of their offerings. But their new mail web app (which consequently becomes the web app for Telecom / Xtra mail) for iPhone and iPad is an effort worthy of some attention, so it’s going to get some.

As we’ve seen again and again, despite not being an “official” Apple carrier, Telecom’s XT network is arguably the network of choice for performance. However, when it comes to the iPad there are some quirks that make managing your prepaid connection more of a chore than it should be. Keep reading to find out how you top up and how you check your balance.
Read MoreXT MicroSIMs back in stock, now include airtime (for a limited time)
When XT first launched their MicroSIMs they had very limited stock, in fact so much so that they sold out very quickly. Then along came 2degrees with their MicroSIMs who seem to have plenty of stock and not only that but they included airtime. Well now there’s some good news for XT users.
Read MoreSpeed tests show that XT still leaves Vodafone in the dust on the iPhone 4 despite 900Mhz capability
Recently we were contacted by readers Ahmad and Grant Smith who have completed some pretty exhaustive speed tests in their home regions of Dunedin and Hamilton / Cambridge respectively. Hopes were high for Vodafone customers that the iPhone 4′s 900Mhz capability (the first iPhone to work with that frequency, providing nationwide 3G coverage on Big Red) would close the gap between the iPhone experience for XT customers and their own which had been somewhat of a gulf on the iPhone 3G and 3GS.
On their own blogs, Ahmad and Grant Smith have found that in the majority of places they carried out tests, XT still blazes ahead of Vodafone. On buttonmasher Ahmad reports that in his tests XT had “a distinct and significant speed advantage over Vodafone 3G” while Grant Smith found that XT out-performed Vodafone at ten of the fifteen locations tested and found that speeds in some locations “were twice as fast or more than the Vodafone NZ Network, at the time of testing.”

Read MoreUh-oh: iPhone 4 FaceTime not working on XT
OK We know what you are thinking: of course FaceTime does not work on XT or any other network for that matter, as Apple clearly stated in the iPhone 4 keynote that it will be wifi-only for the remainder of 2010… HOWEVER… FaceTime over wifi requires activation via your carrier and XT just isn’t having it. Read on to find out why.
Read MoreTelecom to fix SIM cards for Voicemail via over-the-air update. UPDATE: Not true.
Back at the end of last month, we reported that Telecom were to roll-out new SIM cards that would fix the non-functioning voicemail-button issue that has plagued iPhone owners on XT since updating to iOS 4 without our carrier bundle. Now, a source within Telecom has tonight (incorrectly – see update) confirmed that the erroneously-set MBDN field on their V1 and V2 SIM cards will be fixed via an over-the-air (OTA) update by the end of July, allowing iPhone users to set their Voicemail number.

Read MoreTelecom SIMs to be updated, will enable voicemail button on iPhone
When iOS 4 was released to developers in beta form, the first thing we did was get to work on getting our bundles to work. Unfortunately, as you may have heard, we were unsuccessful and it meant that users lost their fancy carrier icons and the ability to use their voicemail button. Well, in an interesting turn it seems that users on XT may soon regain the functionality of that button.
Read MoreAnnouncement: iOS 4 and our Carrier Bundles
Well everyone, the time is nearly upon us for iOS 4 and it is with great sadness that we have to announce that our carrier bundles no longer work with the new iOS 4. We have a copy of the stock bundles from the first beta of iOS4 and upon opening them up we have found that Apple are signing them again. Unfortunately the stock bundles haven’t changed in the public release [of iOS 4].
Read MoreMotorola Milestone coming to XT July 1… what about iPhone 4?
Telecom have just announced that they are to get the new Motorola Milestone, which runs Android 2.1 and will be available form July 1st for a RRP of $999.
This is an “exclusive” deal with Telecom, but the question on my mind now (and the reason for this post) is, does it signal the end of any glimmer of hope we may have had that Telecom will become an official iPhone carrier?
What do you think? Is this a sign of things to come or is it just another handset in the Telecom line up that will sit next to the iPhone?
I think it probably will, I hope not, but I think it will. I could be wrong but with all things taken into consideration you would have thought that Telecom and Apple would have come to some kind of agreement by now if they were going to.
