Telecom’s new Skinny sub-brand soft-launches, config profile available for iOS 5 devices

Telecom has begun to quietly roll out its new ‘Skinny’ sub-brand, which offers pre-paid mobile services over its XT Network with alternative pricing packages and a completely separate brand identity. Looking at the pricing and plans on the company’s website the service does appear to be geared towards calling and texting primarily, but a data add-on of $4 per week for 120MB of data (so roughly $16 per month for 480MB) may be of interest to some iPhone users. Skinny has posted a config profile on Geekzone that can easily be installed on your iPhone should you decide to make the hop, in which case you’ll also need to request a free MicroSIM which you can do through the website or by calling 0800 4754669.

As you may or may not have heard Telecom threw a couple of launch events last night to celebrate getting the iPhone 4S. Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch seemed to get the queues whilst Dunedin didn’t have much of anything. However in the other three centres a great time was had by all and, as far as we know, no one went home disappointed or empty-handed. Details for Telecom’s iPhone 4S launch parties [poll] [launch-pics]

With less than 24 hours to go we thought we’d make sure you know what is happening for the launch parties (yes, parties!) Telecom will be hosting at 12:01am and what happens if you are not in a “main centre”.

Now, before anybody asks why we haven’t done a post like this for Vodafone, the reason is simple: Vodafone haven’t announced any launch details for us to give you. Telecom have been very up-front with prices, plans, launch times and registration processes with very little left in doubt and that’s a massively refreshing approach compared to the fiasco of last year’s iPhone 4 (un)launch from Vodafone. If we do hear anything from Big Red, we’ll let you know. Info on the Vodafone launch can be found here.

This morning we noticed that checking Your Telecom (which provides your current account balance / free minutes / data allocation) over 3G no longer asks you for your user-name or password. A quick call to Telecom confirmed that enhancements to the platform have been made for smartphones (iPhone, Android and Windows Mobile) so that when visiting Your Telecom over 3G the authentication is done via the mobile platform itself, thereby bypassing the need for any user-name or password entry. Your login details are still required when on Wi-Fi, however. And unless we’ve just never noticed them before, there also seems to be some new options for topping up a prepaid mobile using credit card or voucher right from within Your Telecom, which should make topping up the credit on an iPad easier.

Telecom New Zealand has just announced a reward for those who have been lining up all day for an iPad 2 – a Micro SIM giveaway (with a generous 2GB of mobile data!) to each person at YooBee Newmarket. 2degrees also seems to be following suit, with details of a similar promotion likely to be announced very shortly. People who purchase an iPad 2 at leading Auckland retailers may get a special gift afterwards (which has turned out to be a Micro SIM pre-loaded with 12GB of data!).

iPad 2 offers capability parity between Vodafone and XT

Telecom’s iPhone SIM only offer extended again… now until 28th Feb

In case you hadn’t heard Telecom don’t sell the iPhone, however they do want you on their network. They have been offering a $600 account credit when you bring your iPhone to XT (with certain terms) and in November last year they extended the offer in an effort to try an entice more iPhone customers to the network. This ended on 31st January, however due to popular demand they have extended the offer for 2 more weeks (from now) and it expires on 28th February. XT’s bonus top up credit ends, everything’s gonna be 33% more

Since the 13th October 2009 any Telecom XT prepaid mobile customer that topped up would receive an additional bonus credit depending on how much you topped up. That bonus credit equated to around 33% of the top-up value and really made a difference to your balance, especially if you topped up with $60 and got $80. Telecom Voicemail Viewer launching today: Next best thing to Visual Voicemail?

It may not be actual Visual Voicemail, but this could be the next best thing to it in New Zealand. Telecom are launching a new Voicemail service this morning called Voicemail Viewer whereby when a voicemail is left for you a SMS is sent detailing who called, when they called, the length of the message, and — here’s the killer bit — a number to dial to access that specific message, bypassing any others that might be waiting. No more having to wade through other messages and inane voice prompts to get to that critical message from someone you actually care about. New postpaid customers joining XT from today will automatically get the service, existing customers can opt-in by calling 123 from 10am this morning or wait until February when mass migration will begin. Telecom: unable to get money-making deal with Apple

Tonight at the Telecom New Zealand Retail Consumer Summit, Telecom have openly explained why they do not (yet) carry the iPhone: they can’t get agree on a deal with Apple that will “enable them to make money”.

XT MicroSIMs back in stock, now include airtime (for a limited time)

Speed tests show that XT still leaves Vodafone in the dust on the iPhone 4 despite 900Mhz capability

Recently we were contacted by readers Ahmad and Grant Smith who have completed some pretty exhaustive speed tests in their home regions of Dunedin and Hamilton / Cambridge respectively. Hopes were high for Vodafone customers that the iPhone 4′s 900Mhz capability (the first iPhone to work with that frequency, providing nationwide 3G coverage on Big Red) would close the gap between the iPhone experience for XT customers and their own which had been somewhat of a gulf on the iPhone 3G and 3GS.

On their own blogs, Ahmad and Grant Smith have found that in the majority of places they carried out tests, XT still blazes ahead of Vodafone. On buttonmasher Ahmad reports that in his tests XT had “a distinct and significant speed advantage over Vodafone 3G” while Grant Smith found that XT out-performed Vodafone at ten of the fifteen locations tested and found that speeds in some locations “were twice as fast or more than the Vodafone NZ Network, at the time of testing.”Read More

Well, it seems like everybody is making iPhone announcements today except Vodafone. Telecom have just announced that it’s “ready for iPhone 4 users” and has introduced a new ‘Smartphone Extra’ plan with double data allowances for the next three months. This means XT customers can now opt to add 1GB of data and 2500 text messages for $38
per month to any prepaid or postpaid voice plan until the end of September. Read on for the full press release but at this stage we have to say: seriously, Vodafone, where are you guys? Seems like everybody is at this party but the host! Whatever you’re holding back… it better be good!

Uh-oh: iPhone 4 FaceTime not working on XT

OK We know what you are thinking: of course FaceTime does not work on XT or any other network for that matter, as Apple clearly stated in the iPhone 4 keynote that it will be wifi-only for the remainder of 2010… HOWEVER… FaceTime over wifi requires activation via your carrier and XT just isn’t having it. Telecom to fix SIM cards for Voicemail via over-the-air update. UPDATE: Not true.

Back at the end of last month, we reported that Telecom were to roll-out new SIM cards that would fix the non-functioning voicemail-button issue that has plagued iPhone owners on XT since updating to iOS 4 without our carrier bundle. Now, a source within Telecom has tonight (incorrectly – see update) confirmed that the erroneously-set MBDN field on their V1 and V2 SIM cards will be fixed via an over-the-air (OTA) update by the end of July, allowing iPhone users to set their Voicemail number.

Motorola Milestone coming to XT July 1… what about iPhone 4?

Telecom have just announced that they are to get the new Motorola Milestone, which runs Android 2.1 and will be available form July 1st for a RRP of $999.

This is an “exclusive” deal with Telecom, but the question on my mind now (and the reason for this post) is, does it signal the end of any glimmer of hope we may have had that Telecom will become an official iPhone carrier?

What do you think? Is this a sign of things to come or is it just another handset in the Telecom line up that will sit next to the iPhone?

I think it probably will, I hope not, but I think it will. I could be wrong but with all things taken into consideration you would have thought that Telecom and Apple would have come to some kind of agreement by now if they were going to.

XT Relaunched with 30-day risk free trial, Reynolds says “bugger!” [video]

After all of the outages on XT, Telecom have now relaunched their advertising campaign for XT which has been fronted by Telecom CEO Paul Reynolds.

They have also launched a “customer-friendly 30 day Risk Free Trial” which will enable users who sign up to an eligible 24 month plan when purchasing any XT mobile or Mobile Broadband T-Stick, to return the product within 30 days if they are not completely happy with their experience of XT – and receive a refund.

In this honest and comical ad Dr Reynolds confirms that XT is now finally fixed, saying “I reckon you should give XT a shot, it’s now working exactly as it should’ve done” and he pokes a bit of fun at Telecom which (although I’m sure some who were affected won’t find funny) is quite amusing and gives it the personal touch.

UPDATED: Un-metered Facebook access coming to Telecom XT… just not for smartphones.

Facebook has just announced a partnership with 50 mobile operators worldwide to provide un-metered Facebook access via a newly-developed portal 0.facebook.com, and in New Zealand that partnership will be with Telecom. The portal appears to be a stripped-down offering that delivers core content such as status updates, but not things like photos etc.

No date is given for the New Zealand launch, other than ‘soon’. We’ve asked Telecom for comment, and we’ll let you know if any more details are available when we get them.

UPDATE 21/05/10. The service is now live, however visiting the page from your iPhone will result in a completely blank page. Telecom has confirmed that the service will not be available for smartphones, including the iPhone. Ho hum.

Heads-up: Our bundles don’t work on iPhone iOS 4… yet

This is a heads-up to let you all know that our carrier bundles don’t work with iPhone OS 4 right now. To be super-clear: iPhone OS 4 isn’t out yet, but a beta (preview) version of it is out for registered Apple developers. We haven’t had the chance to install it ourselves yet but reader simonwhite has and unfortunately he has advised that the carrier bundles don’t work with it. So: if you need our carrier bundles working, do not install the preview of OS 4 yet.

We’re updating our iPhones today and needless to say, it looks like we have a few coffee-fuelled nights ahead of us to get this thing working again but the good news is the public release of this is at least a few months away (probably July if previous years are anything to go by). We’ll keep you posted on progress, but bear in mind that until the final release is out we still won’t know for sure if we’ve done it. Until then: continue to enjoy OS 3.1.3 with fully-working bundles!Read More

Confirmed: XT issues north of Taupo [updated 1:11pm - service restored?]

We are hearing unconfirmed rumblings about XT issues this morning, this time north of Taupo. We have asked Telecom for comment and will let you know if we hear anything but in the meantime let us know in the comments if you’re experiencing any issues. Everything seems sweet down here in Christchurch and Dunedin but we’re interested to know how you Northerners are going!

A very reliable source at Telecom has let us into a little secret… Telecom have just signed a deal with Apple to offer the iPad with term-contract subsidies and a range of data plans including an as-yet unpriced all-you-can-eat plan – the first of its kind in New Zealand. According to our source, Telecom has secured enough Micro-SIMs and 3G-equipped iPads to begin selling the device from its retail stores at a midnight launch on April 12th.Read More

Telecom’s IT subsidiary Gen-i about to sell and support iPhone?

Computerworld are currently running a story which states that Gen-i, Telecom’s IT arm, are to sell and support the iPhone as of this coming Monday. The piece is light on details but Gen-i are quoted in a statement made to Computerworld this morning, so it seems legit. XT Still Faster in More Dunedin Places for iPhone 3G (March 2010 Update)

iPhonewzealand and Geekzone user Ahmad has repeated his speed tests he did last year in Dunedin using the iPhone on XT and Vodafone.

Data speeds on the iPhone, between Vodafone and XT, are a much discussed topic. There are many different sides of the story and many different reasons behind the results of speed tests. I would suggest that everyone take from this just a view to Ahmad’s experience at the given time in the given location. Some of you may have different experiences and speeds so it would be good to hear your thoughts.

Personally for me the XT speeds, where I use my iPhone, are much faster than that of Vodafone but that is not to say that other areas where you may use it won’t be different.

Paul Reynolds: “Enough is enough”, Alcatel-Lucent put on notice.

Telecom CEO Paul Reynolds has fronted-up to journalists at a press conference this afternoon over last night’s further XT outage, and the situation as a whole. He said that the company recognises the inconvenience that customers have been put to and announced a further compensation package for both consumer and business XT customers. An angry Reynolds spoke of how he feels “let down” by network operator Alcatel-Lucent, that “enough is enough” and that the company have been “put on notice” following this fourth outage.
