When I got an email earlier from iPnz user Camtab I couldn’t believe what I was reading. Vodafone are restricting the use of MicroSIM’s between devices and not just between iPhone and iPad, but between iPad 1 and iPad 2 meaning you are going to need to get a new MicroSIM card.

Vodafone acknowledges 3G issues, fix coming

Last week, we reported on allegations of serious issues with Vodafone’s 3G network, including network drop-outs and failed calls and messaging. A couple of days ago Vodafone formally acknowledged the issue in their forums offering an IT Crowd-style “turn it off and back on again” work-around which was less than ideal, but at 5pm yesterday evening an update was posted to advise that a fix had been identified and that it would be rolled out as soon as possible. The team at iPhonewzealand use Telecom XT for our iPhones, so this has gone under the radar for us until now, but a can of worms has been opened for Vodafone over at Geekzone. Site moderator sbiddle opened a thread in which he described the issues he is currently experiencing with data sessions on his Nokia E71 stalling, SMS messages neither being delivered nor received and voice calls going straight to voicemail. According to his posts and blog, Vodafone CSRs refused to accept that this was a real issue, so sbiddle turned to Geekzone to see if anybody else was experiencing the same issues. Speed tests show that XT still leaves Vodafone in the dust on the iPhone 4 despite 900Mhz capability

Recently we were contacted by readers Ahmad and Grant Smith who have completed some pretty exhaustive speed tests in their home regions of Dunedin and Hamilton / Cambridge respectively. Hopes were high for Vodafone customers that the iPhone 4′s 900Mhz capability (the first iPhone to work with that frequency, providing nationwide 3G coverage on Big Red) would close the gap between the iPhone experience for XT customers and their own which had been somewhat of a gulf on the iPhone 3G and 3GS.

On their own blogs, Ahmad and Grant Smith have found that in the majority of places they carried out tests, XT still blazes ahead of Vodafone. On buttonmasher Ahmad reports that in his tests XT had “a distinct and significant speed advantage over Vodafone 3G” while Grant Smith found that XT out-performed Vodafone at ten of the fifteen locations tested and found that speeds in some locations “were twice as fast or more than the Vodafone NZ Network, at the time of testing.”Read More

Vodafone: iPhone 4 stock sold out

Those of you hoping to get your hands on an iphone 4 today are now out of luck. Vodafone just tweeted “^PB All iPhone4 stock sold out. More stock coming soon.”

Clearly the low supply levels are what led to this mornings debacle, seeing Vodafone only want to sell to its on-account customers. Clearly Apple didn’t supply Vodafone with enough stock and Vodafone didn’t supply their customers with enough details. Fail on both fronts really.

So sorry for all those that missed out, it looks like there will be another wait. How long that wait will be is anyone’s guess. Maybe Vodafone could let us know.

Outright-purchase price of iPhone 4 32GB is $1279? (Update: Confirmed)

iPhonewzealand user Hermes tells us that, having successfully purchased a 32GB model this afternoon, his Vodafone receipt indicates that the outright-purchase price is $1279. In other years, Vodafone have added $30 to the RRP so we could potentially expect to see the 32GB model for $1249 when it goes live on the Apple Online Store this evening. How does that grab you?

UPDATE: Hermes has sent us a photo of the receipt – looks like this is confirmed, for Vodafone at least.

UPDATE 2: We’re hearing reports that the Vodafone receipts for the 16GB are showing $1099, so seems that Apple haven’t added to the RRP this year in which case we can expect the 32GB to be $1279 on the store.

Wow. Seriously? Still no sign of an apology or any announcements from the Voda twitter feed but the Voda website now says “Online sales for iPhone 4 will begin in the coming weeks.”

We’ll make no bones about it: Today’s “launch” has been an epic fail in the PR department… and this doesn’t help. Let’s hope Apple get their act together for their online store faster.

We have had multiple reports that Vodafone will be selling the iPhone 4 in most stores from 12 midday today. The catch? It’s only for customers signing a new contract or resigning. We have also had reports that Apple’s CSRs have been citing 7pm tonight as the launch of the iPhone 4 for outright purchases via the Apple NZ store.

One of our most active users, Camtab, has spotted some possible new Vodafone data plans while using the site today. Camtab says he was in the ‘my add on’ section of the site and saw two new plans which were both greyed out. Luckily, he managed to screen grab them and send them our way! Anyone else that pre-registered with Vodafone just received an email titled “All you need to know about Vodafone’s Micro SIM for Apple”? If so you may not have read all of it and may have missed something interesting at the bottom and whilst not a firm date at least we have better timeline.

Unfortunately it is again more announcements of announcements, but this is the first time we’ve had any real timeframe of the announcement (damn this is hard work).

Heads-up: Our bundles don’t work on iPhone iOS 4… yet

This is a heads-up to let you all know that our carrier bundles don’t work with iPhone OS 4 right now. To be super-clear: iPhone OS 4 isn’t out yet, but a beta (preview) version of it is out for registered Apple developers. We haven’t had the chance to install it ourselves yet but reader simonwhite has and unfortunately he has advised that the carrier bundles don’t work with it. So: if you need our carrier bundles working, do not install the preview of OS 4 yet.

We’re updating our iPhones today and needless to say, it looks like we have a few coffee-fuelled nights ahead of us to get this thing working again but the good news is the public release of this is at least a few months away (probably July if previous years are anything to go by). We’ll keep you posted on progress, but bear in mind that until the final release is out we still won’t know for sure if we’ve done it. Until then: continue to enjoy OS 3.1.3 with fully-working bundles!Read More

XT Still Faster in More Dunedin Places for iPhone 3G (March 2010 Update)

Data speeds on the iPhone, between Vodafone and XT, are a much discussed topic. There are many different sides of the story and many different reasons behind the results of speed tests. I would suggest that everyone take from this just a view to Ahmad’s experience at the given time in the given location. Some of you may have different experiences and speeds so it would be good to hear your thoughts.

Personally for me the XT speeds, where I use my iPhone, are much faster than that of Vodafone but that is not to say that other areas where you may use it won’t be different.

Vodafone announces iPhone 3G 8GB price drops on certain plans [UPDATED: Includes 3GS]

Vodafone just tweeted a price drop for the iPhone 3G 8GB on their $80 and $130 plans. On a 24-month term the device is now priced at $199 and $0 respectively, down from $399 and $199. UPDATE: My bad. There are also price drops for the 3GS in both 16GB and 32GB flavours. The 16GB drops from $599 to $399 on the $80 plan and from $399 to $199 on the $130 plan. The 32GB drops from $799 to $599 and from $599 to $399 respectively. Hit the link for more details. (Thanks, Nordy!)

Breaking: Did Vodafone just ramp their speeds up in AKL? – UPDATED

Did you feel that? A disturbance in the force… like a million voices suddenly cried out in joy, and were suddenly silenced (while they ran speed tests)…

We are hearing anecdotal reports that Vodafone “may” have tweaked their network in the Auckland area today to improve 3G speeds on the 2100Mhz frequency. This could mean a boost in speeds for the iPhone 3G / 3GS, but for now it’s just rumour. We are currently waiting for official word from Vodafone and will post back with an update once we know what’s going on.

UPDATE: 13/08/09 08:25. Vodafone’s external communications manager Paul Brislen has advised that “[our engineers] have been doing something with the software lately, but nothing in particular that should have that kind of impact.” So…. Overactive imaginations? Coincidence? Conspiracy? Now we don’t know *what* to think, but keep us updated in the comments with your experiences.

Vodafone vs XT: Speed

In a recent test performed using speedtest.net on the same iPhone 3GS, Telecom’s XT network has beaten Vodafone in the speed department hands down. Telecom XT hit 5.74Mbps in our test, with Vodafone managing a paltry and decidedly red-faced 0.113Mbps. Without wanting to rub salt into the wound… what you gonna do, Vodafone?
