Quick update about `Sygic updateonly` app problem.

it was a long battle, but finally sygic came to their senses, accepted the problem and the responsibility and decided to provide redeem codes for the people who have been active in their support forum.

I came that close to giving up and buying another GPS app, but its good that justice is still out there.

I would like to congratulate you on your efforts and excellent content over the past 3 years. Although only a short time, you have been providing me with very valuable information as I started my iDevice journey.

To all of the contributors, it has been great reading and contributing to this site, which will be sorely missed, but understandable.

It’s been great being here, this was definitely the place to come for support when there was none available elsewhere. It’s a pity that such a wealth of resource is likely to be let go, but as it is with most ventures, there comes a time to move on. So thanks to Steve and Dan and their team of elves, I quite possibly would not have even entered the iPhone world had this help not been available when I researched prior to purchasing a 3GS back in 2009. I’m now onto an iPad 2, Jailbroken by Abisinthe as of yesterday and loving it. All the best with your future ventures Dan, Steve and the crew at iPNZ.

Thank you guys for all the hard work and invaluable information that you have provided both myself and everyone surrounding iPhone and iPad launches. Honestly without you guys things would have been proven to be much harder, and it looks like that is what it will become in the future. Oh well. All the best for the future and thank you for supporting all the local developers. Hopefully everything will get better with the Earthquakes. All of us in Christchurch know exactly how we all. Very sad news, iPhonewzealand has been a regular on my recent tabs page. I still think there is a need for the site to get an NZ perspective on various app reviews etc. I would suggest some volunteers could take on more of the running of the site but the quality of the content would be hard to maintain.

Gutted!!….you guys (Dan, Steve and all the editors/contributors on here) really owned this space in NZ. This site really was the ONLY source of information of all things iDevice related, and its no small coincidence that it remained that way until XT hit the Iphone scene this year. Thats not to say you became irrelevant or anything of the kind…more a huge “wake the heck up” to Vodafone who can only wish they had your kind of support and breadth of knowledge during hardware launches.

Enjoy your free time and use it wisely….like the iPad 3 launch party!!

Tis a shame, but very understandable, especially after all the earthquakes. Dan & Steve, you’ve put a bloody ton of work into this site, which is definitely the reason why it’s the best iOS resource in New Zealand. I think the website has served its purpose though; it was the only way to get up to date, local and relevant information (ie. about our carriers) which couldn’t be found elsewhere. Now that the iPhone is far more supported in New Zealand, the job is done.

I’m sure the site will be sorely missed — but it’s been a fun ride. Heads held high and all that.

The locked phones are a terrible idea! I also don’t like that they haven’t got any sort of friends plan for texting or calling.

@ camtab: Yup the logic behind the unlocking thing is a mystery to me. As you say, its not like the handsets are much cheaper than the RRP, plus they only want something like $30 to unlock. To me, it’s not worth all the negativity around unlocking and the fact that you’re essentially kicking your customers in the pants as they leave (and therefore making them unlikely to come back) just for the sake of a measly $30. Telecom has worked hard to improve public sentiment towards them, but this could undo it again. I don’t think the public are under any illusion as to who Skinny actually is.

Big fan of Telecom and their speed/coverage so this network will be equally as good but I am not sure its all its cracked up to be with its “locked handsets”. For example the Sony Ericsson Xperia active is $389 locked (cant use on another network, NZ or elsewhere) while its only $399 open term unlocked from XT. Might as well buy there and then join Skinny. They need to make the handsets a LOT cheaper if they are going to be NZ’s first and only locked provider.

ps, having mentioned how great my dads XT coverage is, I have to say that I also have a Telecom T-Stick – a MF626, and the reception is not very good. How can my dad’s phone on the XT network be great, but yet the T-Stick is lousy?

Mike, I’m on prepay anyway, so I assume there won’t be much difference as I think they prepay costs the same?

Steve, my Dad is on the XT Network, and has a Telecom branded R100 phone. He can get a signal anywhere in the house, which is why I thought it’d be a good idea to change to Telecom (although I am only making the assumption that my iPhone 3G will get as a good a signal as the R100)

Absolutely zero difference in terms of functionality, although XT Network is generally faster so you can expect an improved online experience. As far as reception goes for where you are, you probably won’t know until you try.

Need to be careful and know your data use pattern. If you are like me and have a “peaky “usage (the odd video Skype for example) then the “weekly” plan means you could run out and drop into paying very high rates for your data once you exceed the 120 MB. Is a pity it does not auto renew your data once you are out then it may be a worthwhile option.

I have a question concerning changing from Vodafone to Telecom.
I am on Vodafone at the moment and it’s OK as far as a service, but the problem is that where I am reception is awful for Vodafone. If I change to Telecom do I lose out in any way? Does tethering still work? And using the phone as a hotspot using MiWi (for my jailbroken phone).

Any other differences in functionality?

FYI this article fixed my push but it was suddenly unreliable since about December. I think it’s a Yahoo issue as far as I can tell looking online. Try doing things like entirely emptying out your inbox (transfer mail to other folders). Good luck.

Hi Steve. Thanks for the tip. I followed this to the letter and I still do not get Push e-mail from my Yahoo account. I was able to create the account as an “Other” as described above, but still no luck. Any other hints or tips?

I have an iPhone 4 running the latest operating system. Also – just as an FYI – I have received e-mail push from Yahoo in the past, but within the last month or so it has become sporadic to non-existent…

How long did it take for the matching?
Mine has been busy for 4 days now, if it is only matching to what is in the library, surely it should not take this long, I can understand the last step copying non matched songs taking a while

I am reading this post from my new iPad2 from The Warehouse.
the main difference so far seems to be that it comes with a US charger plug and so The Warehouse have bundled a 3rd party travel charger with it.

My first foray in to the world of iOS has been interesting so far… lots of funny little quirks that I am slowly getting used to.

With at least four operating systems and a lot of possible consumers, app developers are confronted with a variety of options for distributing their program. Current stats say that “freemium” games will get the most buzz, even though paid applications are the most well-liked. With lots of apps available, it will probably reach the most popular list. And to get into that most popular list, it just needs atleast a few hundred downloads. Resource for this article: Statistics say that Freemium apps may be the best buzz-generator .

I always thought an app along the lines of AA Roadwatch would be awesome. A user could set a route just like in the maps app and be informed of any closures along the way. Maybe even throw in push notification if something changes while en route.

I imagine this would require an API from AA or NZTA for roads info

The servers must be getting a hammering tho cos I bought a new 4s for my wife for xmas (and my sanity – she did not enjoy her android) and it took two days before I could enable Icloud.
