I have been looking at the various blogs on this issue and it seems like unless you are with a blessed carrier you are stuffed with internet tethering. I have an out of contract iphone3G that I have recently switched from Vodafone to 2 Degrees as the plans for me were much better. I used to use the internet tethering on the phone which I thought was great and I'm now pretty gutted that I cant do this. I also recently bought an Ipad 3G which I hoped I may be able to do the same with as it has advantages when travelling.

Does anyone have any updates on this issue?

I am on 2degrees with an iPhone 3G on 4.2.1 and it can tether via USB just fine.

iPads cannot natively tether.

Do you want to explain "how" you cannot tether the iPhone? Perhaps we can figure out what's up

Like EcosseNZ I'm on 2degrees with an iPhone 3G running iOS 4.2.1 and I can't tether. Tethering just isn't an option within the Settings.
I'd be keen to know how you can? Are you using a jailbreak (which I don't wish to do).

Connect your phone to your PC via USB.

Under Settings on your phone, go to General- Network- Personal Hotspot and turn it on.

On your PC select iPhone under 'Connect To' and it should show on your phone that you are tethering.

'Personal Hot Spot' should on your screen too.

Hope this helps. I am on 2degrees and it all works fine.

It would seem that tethering is not an option on a 3G without tethering now. I must have been thinking of when i was jailbroken. Anyway that process is legal so if you need tether just do it and only install what is required to tether.

I use Telstra when i'm in Aust with my 3g and tethering shows up on the phone and works. I went into 2Degress Westgate to ask about tethering and once again I got a reply we don't know much about Apple products or tethering. It's a shame Westgate store staff are not trained very well. Last time I let them play with my iPhone it took me a week to get my mail going correctly.

I must say Telstra were great they set up my iPhone & iPad plus my on line account. They even set up the Telstra apps on the iPhone and iPad so I can pay as I go. I've tried Virgin, Optus and Vodafone in Aust. Telstra leads hands down with service and coverage.

Their staff are probably trained well, they don't train staff in the instruction of equipment they don't sell. If you want iPhone support then go see an iPhone authorized seller

Rubbish! If they say they support the iPhone and iPad then they should no all about the product.

They say it works on the network, nowhere do they say they support it. However there are a few help pages dedicated to the simpler problems needed to get the phone working on the network.
