Hi, I hope somebody here can help.

I’m planning to buy an iPad 2, and have worked out that for me, an iPad 2 with 3G is the better buy.  I’m not planning to use the iPad much for data intensive purposes when away from home (where I’ll use Wi-Fi), but I figure that it would be foolish to buy a portable device such as this and rely on public Wi-Fi hotspots which are generally sparse around Auckland (even in the CBD).

I think I’ve worked out that it is most economical to run on 2degrees, but from the 2degrees website, I can’t work out for sure if my plan works.

I plan to buy a Data MicroSIM for $20 which will give me 100MB National Data that are valid for 30 days from activation, then top-up every 30 days with a $6 or $10 50MB or 100MB National Data Pack.

Sounds simple, but I’m not sure if this will work.

Thanks in advance.

OR, since submitting this post, I think that I might be better off with a Telecom XT MicroSIM and just use casual data, but any balance lasts a year?  I don't think I can do this with a 2degrees MicroSIM(?)

Thanks!

If you are in Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch or Queenstown, then 2degrees prepay data top ups are the way to go. 1Gb=$20 etc, have a look here- http://www.2degreesmobile.co.nz/prepay/mobilebroadband

Whereas if you are out of one of their zones then you need to buy national data at the Vodafone rate of $6 for 50mb or $10 for 100.

The 2degrees sims have an option on them to send a text (although you can't receive the reply) and you can manage it from their site.

This is the cheapest data if you are in their zones and it is quite fast.

True it does only last 30 days but it doesn't take long to chew through it with all of the movies etc now about on the net.

For the occasional data use you mention the best deal for you is a telecom XT prepaid Microsim and select the 500mb per month data add-on. Charging is done at 10c per meg until you reach a $30 cap for the calendar month. If you only use 50meg one month you only pay $5, 400meg=$30, 0meg = $0 and overage is 10c per meg. Hard to beat that deal
