Is Vodafone Extended 3G used by 2Degrees?

Now that the iphone 4 uses the vodafone 900 extended 3G band, does that mean that when roaming on 2 degrees out of the main centres the extended 3G is available on their network too? My old Samsung j750 shows 3G in Hamilton using 2 degrees, which I suspect is through vodafone (2100 band).

I believe that I can answer my own questions now that I have finally received my  iphone4.

I called up 2 degrees and they sent me a microsim a few weeks ago with no hassles at all.

Once my phone arrived yesterday, I gave them a call and they transfered my account over to the new sim then and there. It was up and running in less that 5 minutes.

Had a fiddle about with the settings but finally got it to access the internet over the cell network.

One thing though, it shows up as vodafone on the carrier display??

Anyway I activated 3g and low and behold it seems to be using the extended 3g network 900mhz. (I am in Cambridge, so not 2100 3g).

I did a speed test and got 960kb/s download speed which I am happy with. As I thought it may drop down to GPRS speed.

So at the moment, very happy.

Coverage is marginal so the old grip of death would make it drop out very easily. I have fitted a "best skins ever" full protector kit (front, back and sides overlays) and a Belkin shell which has stopped this happening.

So to wrap up, I can say that it does seem that 2 degrees do use the extended 3g setup that vodafone has on their network.

I have been doing some speed tests around here in Cambridge and in Hamilton over the last couple of days with my iphone4.

I have tried to post a copy of a screen capture from the results "Speedtest.net" but it won't do it.

Anyway, In and around Cambridge the speed varies with 3g on from 205Kb/s up to 486, whereas today I was at New world Te Rapa and got a reading of 943Kb/s down and 1045Kb/s up 3g on. I then turned 3g off and got 16Kb/s down and nothing up on GPRS. This confirms to me that 2 Degrees are definately using Vodafones 3g.

BTW the tests also showed that my WiFi speed is about the same as the 3g speed I got at Te Rapa.

Still have "Voda NZ" showing in the network strength part of the screen even though I am using a 2 degrees sim.

Cheers

iPhone 4 so it sounds cool as usage then and fast, thats what I like.

I Sold my own 3GS iPhone last year and want to purchase a new Iphone 4 only if going to be Fast Coverafe data usage as the 3GS was GPRS slow as WiFi was Great but thats not when mobile out an about.

Is it worth purchasing then ? As I Live in Te Kuiti Waitomo

Yes, as the iPhone 4 works on the extended 3g band on Vodafone (as this is what you end up connecting to when on 2degrees outside Auckland and Wellington etc) so will be significantly faster than the 3gs which will only pick up GPRS outside the main centres. Check here- http://www.vodafone.co.nz/coverage/ this shows the Vodafone coverage map.
