Hi there,

These are very cool forums! :)

I have a quick question. I have recently switched from Vodafone to 2degrees and I have noticed that since I put the APN details in, my iPhone connects constantly to the data network. An example of what I see on my usage page:

16/11/2009 05:55:24 AM Data 00:00 0.00 $0.00
16/11/2009 05:39:01 AM Data 00:00 0.00 $0.00
16/11/2009 04:50:09 AM Data 00:00 0.00 $0.00
16/11/2009 04:34:57 AM Data 00:01 1.00 $0.01
16/11/2009 02:22:19 AM Data 00:00 0.00 $0.00
16/11/2009 01:08:39 AM Data 00:00 0.00 $0.00
16/11/2009 12:55:05 AM Data 00:00 0.00 $0.00
16/11/2009 12:12:35 AM Data 00:00 0.00 $0.00
15/11/2009 11:55:19 PM Data 00:33 1.00 $0.08
15/11/2009 02:22:10 PM Data 00:00 0.00 $0.00

Putting rubbish APN settings in stops this happening (of course). Because I was on prepay with Vodafone, I never got a statement so I have no idea if my phone was doing similar things. It's a 2G jailbroken phone, but I'm pretty sure it's not running any apps that like to keep a connection going. Most of the time I'm not getting charged, but there are pages and pages of wee connections in my data usage, some of which are up to 14c. Added up they come to several dollars of mysterious drainage. Is this normal?

Cheers

Yep, I have the same problem.

The DataBlocker on iPhonewzealand does not seem to work for 2degrees. It did for Vodafone before I switched.

Phoned 2degrees, they suggetsed I call APPLE!

I have now logged a ticket with the 2degrees Tech people to see if they have a fix or if it is possible to have Data disabled on my account.

Plenty of WiFi wherever I am so don't need Mobile Data.

Any one else have a fix?

I will post an answer if 2degrees come back to me.

Huh? That's what I thought in the first place, I thought the Carriers are ripping us off (Both Vodafone and Telecom charged me everyday for a certain MB but that was on no plan, I properly tested with Telecom with plan, if I don't even use it at the beginning of the month it'll stay unused and after around 1/2 month it starts charging me, but once I get to use it, it was less than the usage it was reported earlier, so when checked my usage again it was less than previously reported, i.e. you have 90MB this is where I didn't touch it, and once I start using it, it stats I have 110MB available. See?)

I was wondering if the carrier are ripping us off especially when you have an iPhone. This is still and unsolved problem, but anyway I have 120MB allowance and I just ignore that problem by using it, so yeah I don't count my pennies and cents anymore. It's a flat rate $12 per month which is pretty good that I don't use Voice and Txts.

Removing the "z" off the APN works fine for me, and will work fine for anyone on a custom IPCC from here.

I'm not quite sure I understand what you mean by that – the settings I had in there were "internet" for the APN and a blank username and password. Or have I got the wrong end of the stick?

No, that's right. 2degrees were smart and utilised simple local hostnames (like internet) for their APNs etc. So, removing the 't' off internet, thus making it an invalid hostname, should block any data use.

The reason I said 'z' was because for VF and XT the APN's end in *.nz

Whenever I use Data Blocker, I go into messages and it says,"You are not subscribed to a data network." So this means that whenever you go into messages it used an ounce of data.

One of the flaws with the iPhone in NZ: horrible data prices.

In the US there are unlimited data plans, which is obviously the main target audience for Apple.

The iPhone was always intended by Apple to be an always-online phone. The data blocker we provide blocks a few of the heavy users but some data will always get through. Push notifications is a constant connection to Apple which pings every so often – that's data gone. If you open an app that checks for news to display, that uses data.

The best way to solve this, which has always worked for me, is remove the APN/set it to a fake one. This will only work if you have a carrier bundle loaded, which allows it to actually be edited. If you are on Vodafone, you will need to load the VF carrier bundle from this website (unfortunatly the bundles for VF got removed so this isn't possible). If you don't, after you set the APN to a fake one it will just revert back. I think it will actually just keep working if you edit it!

The APN is where the iPhone looks to route traffic to. Obviously, if that's null or fake, no data can get out [granted you have a carrier bundle loaded, allowing for it to be actually edited]

My APN was saying "Data Blocked" but still data was getting thru
I rang 2 degrees who asked if I wanted data removed from my account , I advised yes to which they also advised me I would be unable to send PXT (Meh @ 50c a PXT I aint sending any)

So, now I have my 3GS with no annoying data charges Laugh

If you had the 2degrees carrier bundle loaded, editing the APN and rebooting the phone (as to terminate the phones existing connections and refresh it) would block data at device level.

I've just encountered the exact same problem! Soooo frustrating!! I had $30 of 2degrees credit & now it's all gone! Not only was I charged at least 1c every half hour or so, there are a couple of times I was charged $10 & $6 in one hit! At times that it's not even possible I was using my phone! Has this happened to anyone else?
I always use WiFi when I need to use internet on my phone, except for twice when I've used my prepay balance to surf the net for a few minutes at a time.
I've just changed my APN to "interne" & hope this solves the problem. Waiting to hear back from 2degrees as well…

After changing the APN a reboot may be required to kill it's current connection to the APN.
