2 weeks ago i won a contest on youtube and won an iphone from the states and it worked fine with my 2 degrees sim card until i updated it to 3.1.3, now when i plug in my iphone to my computer it says "sim card inserted in iphone is not supported" what do i do?

Unfortunately since the phone came from the US, it is carrier locked to AT&T — it cannot be used on other carriers.
What they would have done for it to be usable in NZ for that period was a hack, specifically an jailbreak and subsequent unlock.
Basically, your phone will not be usable until one of the various iPhone hacker groups release an unlock for the latest baseband. This may be a long time, if ever. It's a real shame you weren't informed of this and knew what the update would do.
