Sorry if this is in the wrong forum I had had no idea where to put this.
Went to update my iPhone and iPad to ios5 GM yesterday and iTunes wouldn't open. At all. No matter what I did. Restarting computer etc etc… Nothing.
Tried a few things that involved changing my firewall settings and reverting back to iTunes 10.4.1, and I managed to get it to open by deleting the library file, but now it won't let me update to 10.5, and I can't connect my iPhone because it needs 10.5. When I try to update the window just closes itself.
Tried uninstalling iTunes and it won't let me, saying I am not an administrator (when I am)
Made a new user account, checked that it is an administrator, still won't let me uninstall.
Don't know what to do here, beta seven expires on Thursday and I need to do something. I also would like to be able to sync both my devices with my music and apps etc.
Anyone got any ideas.
Oh btw I'm running windows seven on a pc and use avg virus protection.

Hi ZoeLou – I'm not particularly familiar with how iTunes works in Windows-land any more, but when you say it won't let you update to 10.5 from 10.4.1 is that via some sort of 'software update' mechanism or have you downloaded iTunes 10.5 afresh and are trying to install it over the top of 10.4.1?

If you're trying via a software update, try downloading the whole app again via itunes.com and installing it over the top. If that doesn't work then I'm not sure what to suggest but hopefully someone here who knows more about Windows than me can help.

Yeah the software update mechanism doesn't work. I tried just installing it over the top and it won't open at all

AVG wont make a difference, do the following

* Press Start
* Type "Uninstall"
* Right click "Control Panel"
* Hit "Run as Admin"
* Uninstall iTunes through this

Homebuilt High Performance Desktop – Windows 7 Professional (x64) & (Backup) Ubuntu 11.04 (x64)
HTC Trophy 7: WP7 – 2°
iPad2: iOS 5.0B – 2°

A long time ago I had a similar issue, no ammount of uninstalling and reinstalling. I even tried removing all traces of itunes before reinstalling.

I dont know what caused it, but in the end I only fixed it with a full reinstall of Windows.

I'd suggest finding out where the iphone backups are stored and rescuing them now before you forget.

I've tried running as admin. doesn't help. Seems like I have a virus or something that's clashing with iTunes. Gonna have to do a full re install I guess. Backing up to iCloud haha thank God for iOS betas.

Have you tried removing it? Delete all the iTunes files then remove it from registry

It won't let me uninstall anything, says I'm not an admin. can I just delete everything? Where is everything stored?

Have had to do this twice now with all of the problems as above.

First back up any Itunes media (music, videos etc) and Iphone backups you may want. (this is just insurance)

Only way to delete a troublesome Itunes from PC without reinstalling windows is to delete ALL Apple software using control panel as Chris said. But he left out Apple software update, Apple application support, Apple Mobile Device support, Bonjour, MobileMe Control Panel, Apple Airport Utillity.

Dont know about utils like Rinse and Tuneup as I only recently started using them. Same for Airport as I only recently got my Airport Extreme (best modem router I have ever had).

Follow this with Revo Uninstaller (free and highly recommended) to get the leftover bits from the registry.

A bit scary I know from experience.

Restart PC.

Check task Manager for any Apple Services and or Processes. (Stopping them here does not help)

If any running you have missed uninstalling something. Go to Control Panel again and delete the one you missed.

Restart PC and check again before continuing.

Check again that all is uninstalled then download Itunes to PC and reinstall.

Pray.

Reinstall all of the others you need.

This, although painful, should allow you to keep all your windows setup.

Of course reinstalling Windows will work as well if you dont have years of customisation to keep

Most people who say to reinstall windows have no idea what that might mean to a mission critical business PC.

My pc is just a personal one with minimal customisation. I have backups of everything important so I might just do the reinstall of windows.
What you outlined sounds good but very lengthy. Thank you for your help.
