Having purchased a reasonable amount of apps I decided to review a heap of them that I hadn't yet bothered reviewing…

I must have submitted around 20 or so reviews in the last few hours – but it's been kinda fun.

One thing I did notice however was a trend where people were saying things like "what a waste of money" which made me kind of angry in some ways when I looked and the price of the app to begin with and many being a mere 99 cents!  (which translate to $1.29 for us in NZ.)

Now I realise of course that there's bound to be many youngsters out there who may still consider that a fair swag of money but surely realistically, speaking as an adult, this small price, approximately what, a third or quater or a price of a cup of coffee, and certainly less than a litre of gas at the petrol station or water at the supermarket, is mimimal.

I have "utility" apps that I use on a daily basis which are of utmost use and value to me and many many games which have provided many hours of enjoyment which, when worked out on an hourly rate, is such a tiny price to pay (we get down to fractions of cents per hour!).

Around the middle of last year I purchased a PC game (new release) which cost over $100 to buy and I got about 20 hours of gameplay out of that.  It's now uninstalled and won't be re-installed.  I simply say to myself that the approx $5 per hour for all that entertainment has been money well spent.  (my wife might say other things of course!)

Around the same time I purchased an iPad (my first and only iiDevice… so far…) and have not bought a PC game since and now while away spare time with games on the ipad – albeit much simpler games of course – but certainly no less enjoyable – and a heck of a lot cheaper.  As far as I am concerned I am "laughing all the way to the bank" currently using the iDevice as an entertainment / gaming console (as well as other more utilitarian tasks etc)

I've actually caught myself looking at the price of an app at say $10 or $13 and thinking to myself "ohhhh that's expensive – will I or won't I" and then have come to my senses and thought about how much I've paid for PC software over the years – or that it costs way more than that for 1.5 hours of entertainment at the nearest movie theatre etc…

Without wanting to touch on the subject of socio-economics and how much disposable incomes people may or may not have etc I would be interested to see how other peope view app pricing – especially in relation to the comments some people put in their reviews when they don't like the app or it doesn't meet their need!

I have spent a small fortune on apps, however I haven't ever really worried about the cost. I think the value for money in most of the apps outweighs the cost. I would like to see developers make more use of in app purchases or Lite versions for the more expensive apps on the store, but I find myself trying apps for $1.29 just because it's only $1.29. It's not a huge amount to lose if the app is no good. Yeah I think "well that was a waste" but I soon get over it (usually straight away) and just forget about it. For me utilities/productivity apps are what they are and if you really need something then price isn't going to be an issue. The big thing for me is whether a utility app is actually what I want, will it do what I need. I have no issue paying for something if it is going to do what I need it to. Those apps I will generally research first but games on the other hand are different, I hardly ever research them, I just go by what I see and what others have said. Most of the games I have, I have played then removed, played then removed and it's no big issue to do that. It's so easy to add and remove games and with so much choice you can uninstall a game for quite some time and then revisit it and get the same level of enjoyment.

For those of you wondering just how much you have spent you should check out App Store Expensive Monitor. It is completely free and all you need to do is download and run it. Once you run it, it searches your iTunes app folder and returns the price for the apps (for any account). Prices show in the currency in which the app was purchased. Beware though you could be in for a fright! Here's a screenshot of mine… ouch!

FYI: Four accounts are NZ, iPnz (US promo codes), NZ (old account), US

Ouch!

Like you say I look at the price of games for PS3, XBOX and PC and suddenly a $13 game looks pretty good value, therefore making a $1.29 game great value. Ok they are on a completely different level in terms of graphics and depth of gameplay, but for the entertainment value and simplicity value you can easily justify the price. Heck, I can use my iPhone pretty much anywhere and get enjoyment out of it, whereas the PS3 doesn't get switched on that often anymore. If you look at the PSP or Nintendo DS which is competing in a similar market (i.e. portable games) then I believe the app store wins.
