It seems like the TomTom car kit doesn't charge iPhone when the app is running. The TomTom app drains battery more than the car kit can charge. Also the app causes overheating and iPhone stops charging. If I use Sygic mobile app, these problems go a way.

@CocoaLove I read this a few times just to make sure I was reading it correctly and then I went to try this myself. As per the screenshot below, which was taken with the iPhone plugged into the carkit and the TomTom App running, it does charge.

I recently bought a Belkin iPhone mount which I'll probably write a review on in the near future — works a charm with both TomTom and Sygic.

@Dan How fast it charges ? Sometimes mine charges like 1% per 10 min when the tomtom app is running. But usually it doesn't charge at all. I am going to test with a different car for sure.

Gentlemen
Where are you purchasing these Tom Tom kits from? On the Tom Tom site for New Zealand it says they are not available.
Cheers

I purchased a cool speaker unit which includes an iPod/iPhone dock, and it is supposed to charge my unit when plugged into ac power. When it is docked the battery indicator on my phone says it is charging but it doesn't charge? Maybe the power output of the speakers is greater than the charge going in, or maybe it's a fault with the speaker unit (the likely answer)? Either way, the battery charge indicator is showing on my phone but there is no increase in charge after using it for 30 mins, this could be a similar case with the car kit?

@Topes I purchased mine from Harvey Norman Botany Auckland. I saw 4 of them in stock from JB HiFi Botany on 24/12/2009.
@Matt Yes. exactly same symptom that I'm having. But thing is, it is charging ok when I am not using TomTom app. I tested with a different car and no luck. So I'm guessing mine is lemon? I also found I was not the only one who had this problem. Check this out.

I will have to pay more attention to mine next time I use it and report back on my findings, Thanks for making me aware of this possible problem.
I purchased mine online at Dick Smith, I believe this option is no longer available as they class the Tomtom car cradle as a "hazardous item"

I keep reading on forums about how the iphone does not change when it gets hot. Well when running TomTom in the TomTom car kit the phone does get very hot. Maybe this is the cause of the issues we are having? No doubt that Nav programs use a lot of cpu and cause the phone to heat up. With the iphone sitting tightly in the TomTom cradle there is no where for the heat to go.
At this stage if we can not get an answer from TomTom I will be returning my for a full refund by quoting the consumer guarantees act.
Its a real shame cos the concept of the product is great !!

My car kit seems to at least hold the charge on my 3GS, if not charge it slowly, with TomTom, iPod and BT running. The only time I noticed it was dropping charge was when my fone was searching for a network. Not a major issue for me.
However, I do have 2 big problems with the car kit.
Firstly, I would like the option to select when the unit charges or not, independent on what its doing while its docked.
Secondly, and much more concerning, is the ability to control the relative volume between the spoken directions and the music through the line out. The little slider and the hardware volume control both don't work when the aux is connected. The spoken directions near blow my speakers when I have my music up. Both work fine when the aux isn't plugged in. The only way around I've found is to plug the aux cable into the fones aux out instead. Pain in the ass. Hopefully this is fixed in the next update. Ideally, I would like the app to have an option where you can have the music playing through the line out and the spoken directions through its speaker, and the ability to choose how the spoken directions interact with the music, ie, fade out, pause or over top.
