Hi all I am new here, just got my first iPhone which is a 4s running 5.0.1. I bought the phone from Telecom and recieved a free SIM. I transferred my number to Vodafone contract a few days later… When I go into Settings-phone, it displays "unknown number"… iTunes says the same thing, it has done this with the XT SIM and Vodafone one. It only annoys me as it doesnt allow iMessage to use my number only email, so people with no 3G data dont get my messages. Does any bidy have any idea how to fix it? I have tried restoring setting up from new, hard reset ETC. TIA :).

You need to go to settings-Phone- Then click on unknown number and you need to change it yourself

Hi – not too sure why this is occurring, but all I can suggest is: a/try a network reset – Settings > General then scroll to bottom. b/ make sure sim pin setting under phone is set to off c/ set up a contact for yourself in the Contacts app that has your phone number and then assign that contact under Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > My Info.
I guess the right carrier settings file was downloaded when syncing with iTunes, or you wouldn't have reception/data… so I can't think what else you could try.

Hi there, Have tried all the previously which didn't work :(… I bought the phone from Telecom and used it for around a week with a Telecom SIM, the problem also existed with this SIM… HOWEVER I do remember iTunes downloading an update for the carrier settings but it never did it with Vodafone, is there a way to make it update it? I have done a hell of a lot of research online and it is a common problem overseas… Usually fixed by either a OTA (Over the air activation) from your carrier (Vodafone has no idea what I'm talking about lol) or putting your SIM in another older phone that allows you to enter your own number… In the mean time I have ordered (awaiting arrival) a MicroSIM to Normal SIM adapter to try this, but there has to be an easier way! its stupid that the iPhone displays "Unknown Number" but is greyed out and wont allow me to change it! I have tried my SIM in another 4s and I cant change it either. Very frustrating lol…

SOLVED! if there are any admins reading this fix should be made accessable as there will be others who eventually have the same issue regardless of the iPhone version… It happens to all of them! After getting zero help from Vodafone or Apple I took someones advice on a forum from overseas, put my MicroSIM into a phone that allows you to enter your own number (this will not work in another iPhone) fortunately for me I got a MicroSIM to normal SIM adaptor with my XT SIM pack I got free with the phone – thanks Telecom! I used a Blackberry Bold 9700, but heaps of other phones allow you to do it. Now my iPhone and iTunes displays my number rather than "Unknown" I can also change it (which I could never do before). The reason it annoyed me is because when your phone doesnt know its own number iMessage will only allow you to send and recieve messages via your email address and wont convert an iMessage to SMS… If the phone you message has no 3G data or isnt on WiFi they will not recieve the message! My apologies for the long story, but I felt it necessary to post the fix as it took me hours and hours to sort it out. Cheers :).

Aaaaah, glad you got it sorted and thanks for taking the time to update this thread. I tutor some night classes in Wellington for people who want to understand and get more from their iDevices, so this could be a problem that arises at some stage…. good to know that there's a fix.
