I'm on Telecom. After past upgrades I had to re-enter my APN settings but there's no place to enter your own carrier settings on iOS 5, and I haven't got a carrier update from Apple that some people seem to have got. Any ideas how to fix this?

I'm in the exact same situation .. no carrier update and no cellular data. Everything else is fine.

I've just read an article that suggests carrier updates come via iTunes, which makes sense.
It looks as if some people are not getting the carrier settings possibly due to Apple being hammered with people updating to iOS 5.
Plug the device into the computer, open iTunes and check for updates for your device. If it gives an error, read it, then wait a while and try again.

I just get: "Your version of iOS is the latest version".
I'm going to try to swap in a Vodafone SIM, bring up the screen, swap SIMs back and put in the numbers then. I'll report back once I find someone with a SIM they can borrow.

I have just submitted a post addressing this issue and outlining a really simple solution. As Dan or Steve need to approve the post and that can take time (they have work) here is the quick run-down.
- Connect to WiFi
- Open Safari
- Go to http://www.unlockit.co.nz
- Choose Custom Profile
- Choose <Network> from the drop down list
- Hit Install
- Hit Accept
- Enjoy your 3G

Yeah, I tried unlockit last night, but it doesn't work for me .. when I click install it says "Profile Failed to Install – Only one APN configuration can be installed at a time."
But under Profiles it says "No profiles are currently installed"

The Vodafone sim swap out has worked for me, the only thing I still don't have is option to turn the Hotspot on.

Had to do the SIM swap thing and now it works fine. I actually did it with a friend on 2Degrees so it seems as long as it's not Telecom it'll work. Bit of a pain but… oh well.

Ok iOS5 seem like a good option at the time to upgrade my 3gs I phone to, unfortunately I am experiencing the APN horror story, no data what so ever. I am on the xt network and have been for the last 2 years with this phone, I have re installed the software twice tried to also install at the Custom profile from this excellent site but also experienced

"Profile Failed to Install – Only one APN configuration can be installed at a time."

With this software update there is no ability to manually enter the APN settings as there was in the iOS4 versions.
Kinda at my wits end trying to sort this problem, as data is a big part of my day to day use of this phone. Any help is greatly appreciated as I have spent hours trying to reserect my phone.
regards Mark

A few of the folks have had success with a SIM swap.
Find someone with a Vodafone or 2Degrees SIM card, bung it in your phone, change the APN settings to XT settings, put your SIM card back in.
If you can't find anyone, I think you can pick up a 2Degrees simcard for $2. I'm not certain a brand new card will work, but I don't see any reason it wont.

Andrew your a star,
the sim swap worked a treat. After posting my first comment I rang Telecom to share my pain of having no data, unfortunately they could not shed ay light on the situation, and yes directed me to this site for my fix Humm.
Is there a fault with my sim that is causing this issue, or is a Apple verses Telecom issue as they are not the official carrier and re seller of the I Phone.
Anyway thanks for you help and wisdom, I stop pulling out my hair now.
Regards Mark
