upgraded to iOS 5 , only took 10 attempts, as the whole world tried to do the same, at the same time today hahaha.
I found that my customized Ringtone did not sync. odd…. I Didn’t see the customized ringtones on my iPhone only the buy ringtones button?
Well, that is what happened to my iPhone 4 after upgrade to iOS 5, after checking that all the ringtone files are still present in iTunes, and yes they where, I started to do the usual restart and reset but still didn’t sync my customized ringtones after numerous attempts. As you know in iOS 5, synchronization can be done via WI-FI which is fabulous. But in order to sync your customized ringtones you still have to pug in your sync cable. Well at least that is what done the ringtones sync for me.
Easy fix for syncing your customized ringtones untick “sync with this phone over wi-fi” and plug in the good old sync cord press sync and bob is your uncle. Dont forget after you done to tick the “sync with this phone over wi-fi”.

"im probably being really dense but i cant see the option to untick to sync over wifi"
In iTunes, when a device is connected, on the Summary page it is down there, it may be below the screen, so scroll down
Note, you dont need to untick wifi sync to use cable, just use the cable

Where are your ringtones located? and have you ticked sync all or have you ticked sync selected?
