Help!! I have been in XT user since june 09.  I am on a 240mb plan & am a very moderate user – anywhere between 80 – 200mb pm & have been pretty consistent for the last 16 months.  Suddenly after upgrading to OS4 my data usage is jumping all over the place with 50+mb days.  My wife is on a 120mb pm plan and her usage is usually between 40-80mb pm.  Since upgrading her data usage is jumping all over the place as well with the last month being over 260mb. Both of us are having between .2 – 5mb days then suddendly have 30+mb days.  Telecom hide behind the "we don't upport iPhone" line and are of no assistance whatsoever.   They cannot say what the data usage relates to but they can show a data usage duration on the big days of anything up to 24+hours!  Today both my wife and I had 30+mb days yet neither of us have used our phones other than checking emails a couple of times and checking the herald website a few times.  I have set the email to manually check and turned off all apps in multi-tasking etc. Has anyone else had a similar experience with OS4 or have any ideas what may be causing the extra usage? Thanks

iOS4 has multitasking. Apps can use your 3G connection while running in the background. I personally hate the backgrounding system and having a billion apps open and being forced to manually closing them all is silly.

As above, if you don't rely on 3G for e-mail syncing/push, or push notifications then you can turn it off as per the above instructions. I wouldn't do this myself as I do rely on e-mail but each to their own.

Still puzzling over this one…. still getting random big day usuages.  Average use anywhere between .5-10mb per day then suddenly 30+mb day.  Last one was yesterday and I can absolutely, catergorically state I did not use the phone for anything yesterday other than a few calls, couple of email checks, a very minor day even by my standards yet XT show data usage in excess of 30mb!  Something weird is either hanppending with the phone or with XT….any ideas?  I periodically turn off all apps via multitasking, do all updates etc via computer, do not use youtube etc.
