How To Jailbreak iOS 4.2.1 On iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch Using GreenPois0n RC5 [Mac OS X]

1. First make sure your device is update to iOS 4.2.1.

In case you are already on a tethered Redsn0w jailbreak (Redsn0w 0.9.6 Beta 6 or lower), then go ahead with the GreenPois0n jailbreak.

In case you are jailbroken using Monte (current version is Redsn0w 0.9.7 Beta 6), which is an untethered jailbreak, then you should first do a clean restore of your iPhone to iOS 4.2.1 and start over.

2. Download GreenPois0n RC5 (currently available only for Mac OS X). All Download links at bottom.

3. Connect your iPhone or iPad to your Mac and run GreenPois0n RC5.

4. Click on the ‘Jailbreak’ button and follow the onscreen instructions to put your iPhone into DFU mode.

A. Press and hold the Sleep button for 3 seconds.

B. Continue holding sleep; press and hold home for 10 seconds.

C. Release sleep button; continue holding home for 15 seconds.

5. GreenPois0n will now start injecting the jailbreak code into your device after a first boot. In case your iPhone screen gets stuck in the initial message saying ‘Initializing GreenPois0n’, then don’t worry. pod2g of the Chronic Dev Team has acknowledged this issue and temporarily suggested a small trick that seems to be working for may. The trick is to keep holding the HOME button (see Step C of putting iPhone into DFU mode above) till you see the scrolling code.

About the “stuck at gp init” issue, it’s completely random. It’s a build problem. We’ll release a fixed version soon. Be patient.

Leave your device alone (don’t press anything or unplug the USB) and it will be back up in around 10 minutes. Start over again from Step 4.

You may have to try a couple of times for GreenPois0n to successfully jailbreak your device.

6. If GreenPois0n is successful in jailbreaking your device, you should see the ‘Jailbreaking..’ progress bar on the application and scrolling texts of code on your device. Your iPhone 4 will reboot and this time you will see the animated Apple logo flipping into GreenPois0n icon.

7. When your iPhone restarts, it is fully jailbroken on iOS 4.2.1, untethered. No more plugging into your Computer and running the ‘tethered jailbreak mode’ each time you reboot your iPhone. Also no more Cydia or other jailbreak app crashes.

Click the ‘Complete’ button now on GreenPois0n to close the application.
