iPhone 3G on any of the 4.x iOS

Is anyone using an iPhone 3G on a jailbroken iOS newer than 3.x and finding it to be acceptable in terms of performance? When the first 4.x iOS came out, I updated to it but it was so slow that it rendered the phone virtually completely useless. I've heard anecdotally that the newer iOS versions are better.

If there's a good, effective iOS 4.x that can be jailbroken untethered, I might look at upgrading. Your thoughts?

My old 3G is running 4.2.1 with untethered jailbreak. My wife uses it and she's happy with the speed, but if I was using it still I'd restore back prior to 4.0 because I like mine running fast.

Simply put, the 3G is a slow dog compared to 3GS and 4, the new iOS4 runs slow on 3G, not to mention jailbreaking a 3G on any OS makes it run much slower, I've learned from experience.

Upgrade to the iPhone 4 and all your concerns will vanish, it's an awesome piece of kit, runs like a dream! Cool

Update: I had to get my phone refurbished as it developed hairline cracks in the case around the docking port and the volume buttons fell off and vanished. When the phone came back, it was on iOS 4.2.1 so I jailbroke it. It went fine, but tethering was gone (apparently that's an 'upgrade' for the 3G on 4.2.1, to not have tethering any more), so I reverted it to iOS 4.1 and jailbroke it. Happy phone, just as fast as before I think.

If you want to make your 3G go faster than ever then download an app through Cydia called "Speed Intensifier", it's amazing! You'll need to install the insanelyi repository in Cydia first. Cool
