Hi all. I'm considering importing an iPhone 4 from the USA. Couple questions. Will an imported iPhone worknon VF in NZ? Does the phone need to be jail broken in order to work? If so what's involved, is it hard to do? When apple updates to ios5 will/could this be a pain to update ? Thanks!

Why buy an iPhone 4 when the 5 is due out in a couple of months?
You'll have to buy from Apple an unlocked iPhone. You'll have to pay NZ GST
The phone will work with a NZ sim card.
I'm going to buy my iPhone 5 out of the States. There is a good saving.

I understand that carrier unlocked phones are to be available ex the states. Not sure on pricing of those. The cheap imports are carrier locked and there is no (software) unlock available on the current modem baseband. The only available unlock is (hardware) via a GEVEY sim. Search dealextreme.com for best price. iOS5 could render the GEVEY solution inoperable, of course there is no compulsion to upgrade from 4.3.3 when 5 does go live.
My recommendation is to forget the artificial low price of the USA phone and buy a nz new unlocked one from apple online directly. That's what I did and have no regrets

If you have a friend in the US you can ask them to buy an unlocked phone from Apple.com or a US Apple store for $649us plus any State sales tax. Oregon has no State sales tax.
The great then now is your can buy the iPhones when you make a trip to Hawaii or US mainland.
My experience with buying from NZ Apple resellers is the poor after sales service. I always buy from Apple on line store.
