Hi, I recently purchased iphone 3GS with software version 3.1.2. Wanted to connect to XT so installed the carrier bundle. Now 3.1.3 supports connection to XT and tethering – so I needto upgrade however iTunes informs me that the firmware file is not compatible. So I try to restore and iTunes again confirms that firmware is not compatible. What do I do now? Do I restore factory settings from the phone? Thanks in naticpation to any of you gurus helping me out.

Hi Dan, not sure how to put images up, but here are the words verbatim "The IPhone "xxxx" could not be updated because the firmware file is not compatible".
Yes, it is a genuine iPhone bought from Harvey Norman.

Can you go and delelte the ipsw that iTunes downloaded, it should be located as below:
XP: C:\Documents and Settings\[username]\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPhone Software Updates
Vista/7: C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPhone Software Updates
OSX: ~/Library/iTunes/iPhone Software Updates
Then try and do an update again and iTunes will re-download it.It sounds like the firware update file may be corrupt.
The carrier bundles have no side affects on updating/restoring your device.

Hi Dan, Still no joy – how do I remove the carrier bundle for XT so I can see if this is the cause of the problem? Cheers

Are you downloading the firmware file via iTunes or via some other means, i.e. from a third party? Our carrier bundle is definitely not responsible for that message. The only way to remove it is by restoring your phone BUT it seems you can't even do that. Something is definitely wrong here. You could try *forcing* your phone to restore by going into DFU mode which is documented at the following Apple support page: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1808
If that doesn't work I would give Apple a call. This is not normal behaviour.

Hi Steve, this did not help either. Could it be anything to do with running Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit behind a corprate firewall?

Am now trying from a home PC running XP on home broadband and it seems to be working – guess it was the PC OS and environment – trap for young players!!

Great glad you got it sorted, and all though I don't like saying I told you so…… I told you so….. it had nothing to do with our carrier bundles

Odd that iTunes should give you that kind of error for what would appear to be a non-route from iTunes to the internet.
I guess they are notorious for nonsense errors.
