"A Data Connection Is Not Currently Allowed"

Since yesterday afternoon I have been having issues with both my iPads on Telecom XT.

One is using a microSIM and one is using a cut down SIM (ex T-Stick SIM).  Both of these SIMs are circa Oct 2010 when bought.

Both SIM's have money on them.

Both iPads display a range of errors when trying to use Safari or any other internet service.  The first usual message is "A data connection is not currently allowed" and then the usual not connected to the internet message.  I also get " Could not activate cellular data network.  You are not subscribed to a cellular data service"

I have checked the APN settings and they are all OK – internet.telecom.co.nz.

Ringing Telecom has not proved helpful.  It is their belief that both iPads have co-incidentally developed a hardware fault and need to be returned for exchange!  They spent time with me on the phone and got the numbers of my 2 SIMs and checked those… they checked the tower near me (by asking for my home number…) and said that was OK… and said they had no outages.  They did mention an upgrade to txt messaging system but said that shouldn't affect this.

I am hoping that the issue IS a telecom one and will resolve itself in due course…

Anyone have any advice / thoughts on this?

Cheers in advance…

EDIT:

I have now spent some time investigating.  Both SIM's work fine on my laptop placing them in a T-stick.

Both SIMS appeared to work again after replacing each back into the iPad but then did the same thing as before.

After some further investigation I have determined that if I have only ONE of the iPads on cellular it works fine.  It's when I attempt to have a second iPad on 3G it refuses to connect.

Is this a known issue / limitation?  Do the frequencies overlap and interfere?

What iOS version are you running? I have the same issue of data dropping out and not connecting on my iPhone 4 with 4.3.1 (version may not make a difference but only noticed it since I upgraded)

I found the only way to get data working again was to change the APN to direct.telecom.co.nz instead of internet.telecom.co.nz

Does that work for you?

Hi there,

I am running 4.3.1.

Subsequent to my original email I've been playing further and have googled to find that others are having similar issues following 4.3.1.  I can fix my issue by turning on the cellular, then turning Wi-Fi on then off, then renaming the APN settings to any old rubbish, then re-setting the APN to the correct one.  For some reason if I follow these exact steps I can get it to work.

I have replicated this on both iPads.

I suspect it's something to do with 4.3.1

UPDATE:

Following installation of iOS 4.3.2 this issue has been resolved for me.
