Like a lot of people using an iphone on a telecom connection, I can't send e-mails, only receive them. outgoing mail server is currently set to SMTP.xtra.co.nz and incoming is using my email address.

What can I try as turning off WiFi doesn't help!

Listen I'm not sure if you use a mail app on your PC / Mac but if you do the best thing to try first to get your settings correct is to open itunes and copy and replace all info on your phone with the accounts that show up in outlook/ mail.  This will only work of course if you use a custom outgoing server as opposed to the outgoing server of your Internet provider

Does that make sense?

If some people use Telecom as there provider on their pc they use smtp.xtra.co.nz as the outgoing or whatever it is.  if you use your own mail server you would be using smtp.joebloggs.com or mail.joebloggs.com sometimes its best to let itunes copy over the settings rather than manually enter them as you already know that your mail app is working.

I use mobile me so the outgoing is all done for you and I do have a custom domain so I use itunes to copy the settings from Mail

I use Microsoft Outlook for filtering my e-mails. I tried setting up my outgoing server on the iphone as smtp.**my own server**.co.nz, but it fails every time. first error msg "cannot connect using SSL do you want to try setting up the account without SSL?" I select "yes" then second error message "SMTP account verification failed – the SMTP server … is not responding. Check your network connection and that you entered the correct information in the "outgoing Mail Server" field"

does this point to a specific problem?

Very Odd if you have it working on mail app and not on iPhone, where are you based, have you tried a local apple reseller?

If you are sending via the xtra smtp servers with an email address that isn't @xtra.co.nz (i.e [email protected]) then you need to register that email address with Xtra to allow it to send.

To do that follow these instructions:
http://help.yahoo.com/l/us/yah…..QwL66AkiN4

Once you have done that you should be able to send emails via the xtra smtp servers on your device.
