I have been having a bit of trouble with my iphone 3gs using telecom xt. I insert my sim and enter the settings laid out on this web site and all it does is come up with no service. Also under the carrier option, it always changes itself from telecom xt to automatic. At times it works, but when i come to call or txt it drops out. Also if i get it working in the evening (when i sort this all out) by the time i wake up in the morning im back to square one.
The phone was bought from the apple web site so should be unlocked.
if anyone has any info that could help it would be greatly appreciated

Hi there. 'Automatic' is the correct setting for it to be on. If you have an XT SIM in there 'Automatic' will always pick XT while you're in NZ, but if you go roaming overseas it will automatically pick a carrier you can roam on. I wouldn't recommend changing this setting.
Do you ever get service? I'm a bit confused because first you said "all it does is come up with no service" but then you said it works at times.
If you never get service then make sure you have 3G enabled under settings –> general –> network. If 'Enable 3G' is set to off then your iPhone will never see the Telecom network as it is 3G-only with no 2G fallback.
If you get service sometimes but it is unreliable then you are either in an area with poor coverage OR you have a faulty SIM OR a faulty iPhone. Diagnose them in that order.
