I've just attempted to join Telecom and the very helpful person on the phone told me:

1) a data allowance has been added to my account and this can't be changed

2) if I top up now I can use it but I will get charged again on the 1st of next month

So effectively I can now pay $30 for a data package and in just over 24 hours time pay another $30 for the data package again.

Is this true????

I'm off back to 2 degrees if it is, despite the poor coverage where I live!

This is not true.

Telecom data allowances for the plans renew at the beginning of each month, not the balance. Here's how it works:

If you are on a $30 500MB plan you can use 300MB ($30) then you don't get charged for the next 200MB. But you get charged as you use it so if you only used $25 worth (200MB) in the month then you would only be charged for that and on the 1st of the next month you would have $5 balance still.

Where Telecom seem to be getting themselves and their customers confused is that the usage resets to zero at the 1st of each month, but whatever balance you have remains on there.

Also noteworthy is that the date your data resets is not necessarily the first of the month. It's just a bloody pain, my brother's Micro SIM for his iPad expires in the middle of the month for his data pack.

You can find expiry and usage details on http://cwa.telecom.co.nz/yte-u…..band-usage

If you are on the smartphone plans, then your data doesn't reset at the start of the calendar month. Its a month from when you activated as are the texts which is good.

Just a word of warning with the 2500 + 1gb plan at the moment. No where on Telecom's website does it state that they charge you $1 per mb for the first 26, then the next 1000 are prorated. So if you were expecting to be charged 10c per mb for what you use, this plan is not for you.

Hopefully Telecom will update their T&C to reflect this.

mdubsnz – Are you on the 1Gb Smartphone Plan? Does your usage meter currently show you on casual (but billing correctly)? Mine has shown I am on the casual plan for the last 2 days but I am getting billed right. Just annoying as it shows I am exceeding my allocation but I am not and would prefer it displayed correctly. Just curious if others had same issue

Certainly does camtab. Infact I cannot even connect to pdaportal/YT anymore, it just says unknown LAPD? *333 reports correct usage however. The annoying thing is that the pdaportal/YT issue also stops consume app from reporting the correct usage (although consumer would never report sms usage making it only semi useful).

I called Telecom this morning about it and they said they would look into

As long as I'm not being billed incorrectly, then in the short term its no biggie.

Same here: on smartphone 1gig promo plan. Can't see usage meter via yt or consume for last two days. *333 still gives correct data tho. Just to let you know what the Telecom CSR told me and is reflected in my billing:
1st 24MB @$1 = $24
1st 70 text @20c = $14
total $38

Ta for that leStar.

I clarified this with the lady at Telecom when I ported, but the 1gb promo lasts indefinately per se after you have signed up, as long as it was prior to Sept 30 correct? In other words, the incentive is to sign up prior to Sept 30 to ensure you get 1gb of data for the price of 500mb.
