I live in a densely populated suburb in Auckland and has poor reception on my iPhone 4; so does my son who also have the same phone and my wife's Sony Ericcson. We can only get 1 bar of signal if we wander around the house searching for it. So I lodge a fault with XT and after much waiting, this is the response I get…
"I have looked up your case and found some updates from Tier 3 team. They have advised that it is more like the handset related or single user, rather than the network . This is because you are in a fair coverage area and there hasn't been any other cases reported from that particular location. The team has advised you to try your sim in a telecom sourced device and see if you experience the same issue. This is because iphone 4 is a not a telecom source device."
So to all iPhone 4 users, be aware before signing up to XT as they are now saying that your iPhones may not attract enough signal and there is nothing they will do about it. Funny though, I get full reception when I am at work. Go figure.

it's also a combination of the handset and the construction of the house. All handsets have different construction and strengths and weaknesses. Unfortunately one the weakenesses for iPhone's is the antenna construction when compared against other phones. XT runs the 850 / 2100 network and Vodafone runs the 900 / 2100 network. The iPhone 4 is a 900 / 2100 device, but to be honest the difference in frequency isn't that much.
I've got a 3Gs in Sale Street and in the office fair to average, outside the office, excellent coverage. You can try a Vodafone pre-pay to see if there is a difference and if the 900 helps.
Like any business, for product that isn't sold by the company they will not guarantee anything really, even though they advertise that they want iPhone users to join the network. Vodafone is the same, they can not guarantee coverage as there are so many obstacles that can effect coverage.
Welcome to wireless communications.

I believe the iPhone 4 is actually 850/900/1900/2100 MHz, so it should run (and does run) just as well on XT as on Vodafone as on 2degrees.
It sounds like you just have bad reception at your house unfortunately. You could try out Vodafone at your house and see if there is any better reception

2degrees has better coverage than XT and Vodafone at my house. Try 2degrees and support a network who is lowering our costs. I hope its available where you live.

I've found the opposite, when I was on xt with the 3GS and then the iphone4 I had pretty much perfect reception almost everywhere I went. I'm based in palmy but went to welly, hawks bay, taupo, taranaki etc. After swapping to 2degrees a month ago I want to go back to xt. I've had nothing but reception issues from day 1 on 2degrees, phone continually losing signal, getting confused when the 3G signal drops (which is very common), and haven to revert to 2g signals because even the vodafone 3G signal is garbage.
It may be slightly dearer on xt but I'm happy to pay for a consistent and reliable service.
In conclusion, I've found xt far far superior in terms of coverage than the other options.
