Hi,

I'm running a 3GS on the XT network. Possibly a dumb question, but if I access the internet from home, where I have a wireless network, how do I know whether my iphone is using the WIFI network, or the 3G network. Obviously I don't want to burn up my 3G data plan. I have the "3G Enabled" option switched on, and the IPhone connected to my wireless network.

Also, different topic, but I've successfully downloaded and installed teh XT Carrier package – Voice mail button works, have teh telecom setting in my Phoen settings, but I'm not getting the telecom walpaper on my initial screen – any ideas?

Cheers
Neil

Hi Neil, welcome to the forum. I use my iPhone on my home wireless connection too, but when I'm away from home I use 3G, the phone will automatically switch to 3G when it can't access a wireless network. Simply put, you know when it is accessing 3G because a 3G icon will appear on the top left of your phone, and when accessing Wi-fi it will show the icon in the screenshot below.

Thanks Matt. You confirmed what I thought, but its good to remove the uncertainty. So shuld I leave them both enabled, and let the phone chose, or do I need to be enabling / disabling one or the other?

I'd recommend leaving them both enabled and allowing the phone to do it's job automatically. I am blown away how quickly it connects to my home wireless then switches over to 3G if I leave the house. I've also connected with other wireless networks and it's so quick and smooth, does it all automatically for you unless you need to enter a password for the network. You'll figure out what works best for you in time.

I'm on a $40 per month plan with Vodafone, with that I get 250mb of data per month. I use 3G every day when I leave home and sometimes surf the web at lunch time for 30mins. I was pleased to see in my last invoice that I only used a total of 32mb from my data allowance, so I'm not going to be so paranoid in future about my 3G usage considering how little I use, even though I thought I used heaps and was going to go over my limit! Cool

Yes, over usage is a bit of a concern for me, but again, its reassuring to hear about your levels of usage. Thanks.

FYI folks, on XT you MUST have the '3G Enabled' option switched to 'On' otherwise you won't get a signal. XT is 3G only.

So far my usage has been pretty low! Which is quite shocking really, considering how much I have been using it via 3G.

Settings – General – Usage
This page has a Cellular Network Data item, I could be misinterpretting this bit but I believe this is what data goes out over the 3G network (ie: not Wi-Fi). This is how I have been keeping an eye on what usage I am doing (currently showing approx. 90MB since the 8th of Dec, I have been hitting the 'Reset Statistics' button around the 8th of every month, which is when my plan resets apparently).

Can anyone confirm that this is correct? As Bond said above, it is good to remove the uncertainty.

Cheers,
Nick Cool

Thanks, thats a great suggestion for keeping track of data usage. I did some reading and I believe the Cellular Network Data refers to 3G data and not Wi-Fi. Smile

Hi I've heard – from Dan the administrator – that the phone usage meter is not reliable. Pity as it is just what we need.

Good to know then, I will keep an eye on it closely. As yet I havent even come close according to the meter, so I hope it is not too far out?
It would be good to know what is not reliable about it, etc. Any specific uses it doesn't track or such.

CHEERS,
Nick

I've found this information. It tells you iPhone will use cell data for push traffic regardless of WiFi connection. On my telecom log, these traffics are like 200KB to 300KB per hour. I have mobile me account on push, google account on exchange push and Beejive IM on push notification.

I never trust the built in usage meter. I just login to the Telecom website for the usage statisics.

Usage update for those that were interested.
08Dec09 through 08Jan10 – Total Data 126.8750MB

Not too bad I thought, it helps that I am connected to WiFi a lot of the time.

Just a question. Is there a reason not to trust the usage meter. Null did you check it against your bill remembering that the usage meter is for total usage and would need to be rest each month?

I appreciate that at least the Telecom online meter is how you are billed but is there a particlar reason the meter isn't trustworthy?

Admittedly I'm not so concerned about usage as I have a gig of data and connected to wifi most of the time anyway. But would be interested to know.

On top of this it would be a pain having to reset your usage meter manually at midnight every billing cycle to make sure they match.

Personally I found it to be unreliable. There would be times when it was saying I had used less than the Telecom usage meter. I can understand if it said I had used more than what the Telecom usage meter said as that may not be up to the minute, but when it says less for me that's an issue. I will run some tests from when my next billing cycle rolls over and report back to get some proper numbers.

Also as you say you need to make sure you reset it at the right time otherwise for a whole month you can't rely on it.For the small amount of data it uses I would rather use TWorld or wait until I am near a PC.

Topes – unfortunately I didnt pay enough attention to the number, but I do recall it was somewhere in the 120mbs download, and only a little up. I also didn't remember to reset it until the 11th.

I believe I've got the billing (Vodafone) set up to email or txt me when I get close to my usage cap, so i'm not going to worry about it for now as I am on wifi most of the time also.
