Hi all,
Great to see a dedicated forum for the iPhone, I look forward to keeping up to date with the latest info.
We've just recently purchased two iPhone 3GS's and signed them up on a couple of XT business plans, complete with data. The problem I'm trying to get around is to do with the email settings – in particular, the Outgoing Mail Server address in the Mail App.
I have spoken with Telecom techinical team about this and they said it should be set to "send.xtra.co.nz". However, we host our own IMAP mail server (do not have an @xtra account) so this Outgoing Mail Server does not seem to work for us.
I've been told that in order to send email from our phones using the SMTP send.extra.co.nz, we need to be signed up to an @xtra account. Is this correct?
We are scratching our heads now as to what to do. We have two brand new phones that can receive email, but cannot send. We were not aware that non-xtra addresses would not work properly.
Can anyone offer some advice on this?
Thanks very much
Best regards,
mjmzdk

Hi mjmzdk
Had a similar problem trying to send emails from a paradise account on my Iphone 3GS using the telecom 3G network
It would allow some email address and then reject others including xtra.co.nz, paradise.net.nz plus yahoo.com but would work perfectly if using the iphone on the home wifi
After talking to a not really helpful Telstra rep (they own paradise.net.nz) who told me that the paradise account system would not support iphone and would not work with some email addresses through the telecom 3g network. Managed another call to a helpfull Telecom representive who first gave me the "we dont support the iphone" but was interested anyway and did some digging. He said that some servers will reject the adresses as its not coming direct from its own network hence why it worked on the home wifi
He suggested 2 solutions
As i thought that joining the telecom xt nexwork I would be able entitled to a free xtra account – I was wrong
You have to purchase a telecom internet plan to use the xtra.co.nz network
1. Just use a dial up account even if you acutaly dont even use the "dialup" for about $10 a month or
2. Use a free imap gmail account
I have set the Iphone up with two accounts. I can still receive emails from my paradise.net.nz account when out and about and send emails using a outgoing mail server smtp.gmail.com and while home under the wifi umbrella use the smtp.paradsie.net.nz account
When you set up two accounts in the iphone you can select what outgoing user adress you would like to use
The only issue is that your reply adress is from username@gmail.com when out and about
Recomend reading the gmail help on the imap email account setup – Not the smtp setup
Obviously this won't achieve what you fully looking for but maybe something in my info might help you find a solution
Cheers
Darryn

Surely you need to be putting in your own Server details for sending mail?
I use a few different ones, one of which (for this site) uses smtp.webhost.co.nz and it works fine without the need to authorise with Telecom. If you are trying to send an email from someone@somewhere.co.nz via xtra then yes it should be authorised with Telecom. But if you are trying to send the email through the server that is provided by the host of "somewhere.co.nz" then you just need to make sure those settings are correct.

I to have had the same problem – iphone connected to the telecom 3G and data plan, but a paradise email. If receives beautifully but no joy with sending as either doesn't recognise the recipients addresses as correct (send.xtra.co.nz) or rejects the server with the paradise settings. Works fine on the Wifi, however this isn't much use as it is when I am within 10 m of my computer anyway. Does anyone know if there is a solution and what the settings would be?, or do I just grin (horribly) and bear it? cheers.

I had the same problem with TelstraClear using POP3 and SMTP. The SMTP server does not accept mail sent from outside the network (using 3G means the mail is being sent from outside Telstras network). The guy at TelstraClear told me to use the Vodafone smtp server (I am on Vodafone). Sure enough it work (no need for user name or password).
It might be the same for you. Try and use the XT smtp server. You can set up multiple smtp servers in the iphone (adavanced setting under each mail account settings).

I'm with Vodafone, not XT, but I spend a lot of time connected to wifi Internet via an Xtra broadband connection – so the same "rules" may apply.
I use Telstraclear POP3 and SMTP servers for my mail with no problem by simply adding my username and password for the Telstra SMTP server as well as the POP3 server.
It seems Telstra will allow you to access their SMTP server from an external network, but only if you authenticate.
I think this may help users having trouble with their Telstraclear/Paradise email addresses.

Hi, I have the same problem described by mjmzdk, and the solution proposed by Homelock in relation to GMAIL didn't work for me.
Only solution I can see is joining XTRA. Anyone else got any ideas or had luck with the GMAIL solution ??

What are you're email settings on your iPhone? What is your Wi-Fi setup?

Hi,
sending and receiving is fine via wifi. no problems
receiving is fine using 3g.
sending is the problem, telecom say that you need to have an xtra account, as they do not allow anyone to use their xtra smtp (eg smtp.xtra.co.nz or send.xtra.co.nz) which is unlike vodafone.
have tried using smtp.gmail.com and using my user name and password, still no luck

So here is an example.
I am using XT for mobile service. I have Telecom at home/office. I use smtp.webhost.co.nz for emails for iPhonewzealand and they send and receive fine on both 3G or Wi-Fi.
You don't need to have an Xtra account to send on the XT network. Gmail has it's own mail setup on the iPhone and you should be using that for Gmail, any others you just need to make sure they are set up correctly. If you are using (as an example) someone@vodafone.co.nz then you should use Voda's smtp settings, not Xtra's smtp.

Hi there – as a real iPhone newbie, I switched my new iPhone to XT, without understanding that the mobile email doesn't work without an .xtra account. The phone was originally set up with Vodafone settings, but as soon as I switched to a Telecom SIM card, the email stopped working. Because my email is with ihug (i.e. vodafone) according to Telecom Complex Data person, I won't be able to use this function without an xtra plan.

Often ISPs (such as Vodafone/ihug) only allow mail connections from their own network.

Bummer dude. I'm with VF and have ihug addresses as well (3 that I use on my iPhone), they all work great. It pays to research a little bit when it comes to changing teleco's, they don't all play by the same rules, as you've found out.

If this is true then what we have here is a case where Vodafone are disallowing access to Vodafone email servers unless you are connected on the Vodafone network. I guarantee you 100% that this is not Telecom blocking your access to the account. It is *not* necessary to use an Xtra email address on an XT connect iPhone. As Dan said, both myself and Dan are on XT and we access our @iphonewzealand.co.nz accounts, I access my Yahoo and GMail accounts, Dan accesses his MobileMe account and we both also use corporate Microsoft Exchange accounts. There is *NO* requirement to use Xtra whatsoever.

I have my own IMAP and I just used smtp.cnzjb.co.nz and worked fine.
Note: Where I have cnzjb you have your server @thisthing.co.nz

Not being very technically competent, I still don't have working mobile email on my iPhone. Let's start at the beginning – do I need to download the XT carrier bundle for me to get mobile email working? Everything else on the phone works fine for my use, so I wondered if installing the carrier bundle was "necessary" for me to get mobile email. Your advice is appreciated.

Hi there is a topic on here entitled "can't send emails to colleagues address" it on about page three of this forum. Have a read , I think it may be relevant to your issue.
Also, I am a clear email address and I use smtp.xtra etc for my outgoing, not send.xtra as you have discussed-not sure if that is important.

Hi Guys,
I have been having a similar problem with my HTC Smartphone. My work email works fine through the outlook exchange server but I was wanting to put my home paradise email on as well. I have been receiving emails fine but not able to send anything. I tried talking to Telecom who told me to talk to paradise etc….. no help there.
After reading the posts on this forum, I set the outgoing (smtp) setting to smtp.xtra.co.nz. I deselected authentication and made sure any SSL requirements were deselected. Het presto my emails are now going out. They also say that they come from my paradise.net.nz account.
Hope this helps those still having problems.
