Problems calling 021 phones from XT Network

Just wondering if anyone else has experienced this …

I have an iPhone 4s – iOS 5.0.1. I'm on the XT network (but with an 021 number – not sure if that's relevant), and several times over the past couple of days I've phoned users (all of the problem ones seem to be on 021, but may just be co-incidence) – I don't get a ringing tone, and the call timer starts counting up (I assume when they answer), but I can't hear them, and they can't hear me.

If I hang up and try again I get the same. I've restarted the phone and got through, but uncertain if this is what's helped (it's only happened about 10 or 12 times). Seems quite random.

Any one had similar issues or got any thoughts?

Many thanks.

You can read lots about it here https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3404857?start=1125&tstart=0

I would recommend the following steps.

1) Take a deep breath, the process of having an iPhone replaced can really suck, mostly because you shouldn't have to do it, but also because it's a smart phone and there's some dumb users. Apple doesn't make a habit of replacing good phones.

2) Do a backup of the phone. Connect the phone to iTunes when it shows up, right click (mac = 2 finger click) and select backup.

I believe you can backup with iCloud instead, but I'm not familiar with the process so cant give any pointers there.

3) Restore the phone with iTunes (this wipes everything and starts again), set it up as a new phone (don't use the backup this time). Put as little on as possible, just contacts and anything you NEED to get by for a bit.

Once it fails again (hopefully fairly soon) phone Apple directly. 00800 7666 7666 (Free call to Australia)

Apple is going to ask you to backup and restore like they ALWAYS do, hopefully when you say "I already have" they'll talk through what you did and with any luck accept it as done.

Hopefully, in the end, you will be told to go back to the place of purchase and get a replacement. Be sure to get the apple case number and take it with you

Tell the person instore what the phone is doing, you've been talking to Apple, they've said to get it replaced, here's the apple case number.

Some notes:

-If apple make you to restore the phone again, you probably won't need to do a backup again provided there's nothing new and important on it.

-You could just go to the place of purchase and talk to them, you might get lucky. If you do, be sure you've backed up the phone or you might loose everything. Personally I'll always phone Apple first.

-You can skip the backup and restore steps to begin with, but Apple will ask you to do it. I do it first, convince them I did it properly, and get it all sorted in one phone call.

-Apple don't repair, they replace.

-Plan to be without the phone for up to a week. Unless you get super lucky, it'll get sent to Auckland, assessed, and a replacement sent back.

Good luck

Thanks Folks,

I had it happen to me today as well, but this time dialing a landline number, and perhaps more significantly, if I tapped the speaker – then tapped it again, the audio returned to the earpiece.

I had a good read of the link posted by Andrew (thanks Andrew) – seems that there are a lot of people with this issue, but "the jury is out" as to whether it's hardware or software. My gut feeling is that it sounds like a software glitch (audio being muted or routed somewhere else), so I'll hang tight and see if iOS 5.1.0 cures anything.

Interestingly, the fault only occured today after I was on one call, and missed another — so (pure speculation here, but something to try), could the bug have something to do with the call waiting (where a 3rd caller would have audio muted, and the phone is carrying the mute through to the next call). Long shot I know, but I might turn off call waiting and see what happens.

I rang Apple and they advised it looks like it may be a hardware problem. The adviser said he was going to read https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3404857?start=1125&tstart=0  He did say to still work with 2 Degrees at this stage and if 2 Degrees says they have found no problems then ring them back and they will replace the phone. He did say he has had one other iPhone 4s with this same problem.

Colin ring apple 00800-7666-7666 log the problem so they can build the case up for our end of the world.

New 4s on its way by courier.

Having Apple care speeds up the replacement with no cost ($40.00) for fast delivery. Apple is also replacing my screen protector free.

Apple does put a hold of $1100.00 on my Bankcard until they recieve my 3 week old 4s back.
