Reasons NOT to switch from VF to XT

I've done a lot of reading on the site and in the forums and there are lots of things written about XT being better than VF in various ways.

But what the disadvantages to switching? (Apart from Visual Voicemail – ha!)

E.g. jailbreaking carries significant risks including bricking.

Funny how changing to XT doesn't involve Jailbreaking or unlocking and is fully endorsed by Apple.

You're just as likely to brick your phone doing a restore on legitimate firmware than doing anything whilst jailbroken.

Your move.

Yeah jailbreaking is irrelevant to this subject.

It would be good to see a comparative chart listing the differences between the 3 NZ networks, eg. Pricing, coverage, support, etc. Then people could make an educated choice what best suits them. Price is often the driving factor, but the coverage areas are important to some as well, especially those travelling the country.

There is already a comparative chart on this website:

It is 6 months old now so be interesting to know if things have changed.

OK, I should have been clearer about my jailbreak reference. I meant that jailbreaking carries known risks which are well talked about. In comparison, what are the known risks of switching to an unofficial carrier – specifically XT.

The chart Ivan links to is predominantly about cost. I'm looking for gotchas like the fact that Visual Voicemail won't work on XT. (Even though it doesn't yet work on VF, in theory it will). The chart also doesn't explain what "Twitter/Facebook Integration" is.

In summary, ignoring cost, what won't work?

Visual Voicemail? Neither network supports Visual Voicemail…?

The only disadvantage I can think of is that tethering will not work on XT without modifying the firmware of your iPhone. There are plenty of advantages though, like nationwide 3G and faster data speeds.

There are no 'risks' in switching to XT.

I know no networks currently support Visual Voicemail, but it is "coming soon" to Vodafone. Regardless of how vapourware that is, it is not currently "coming soon" to XT unless the whole carrier exclusivity thing changes. By switching to XT I lower my chances of ever having VV based on current knowledge.

Telecom are still in talks with Apple AFAIK (well, they were July last year and I assume still are). Now that the network is more established the upcoming iPhone may be sold on XT. Heck, their network supports it far better.

Well, "in talks with" means nothing unfortunately. I agree a forthcoming model is a likely time for this to happen.

Basically I have come to the conclusion that mobile provider loyalty is a waste of effort today. I will switch to XT on open term or even prepaid and if they screw up I will look at going back to VF. I had hoped that one day Telecom would be as cool as Vodafone, but the opposite happened. Vodafone got as bad as Telecom. 10+ years with Vodafone (and BellSouth) has been a journey from sublime (top customer service and GSM versus TDMA) to ridiculous (pathetic customer service and punitive plans).

Just thought I would chime in here… unless Apple make some changes in how things work then the only thing that XT can't do that Vodafone can are Visual Voicemail (not available yet but they could launch it) and Tethering.

Other than those two things not working, and it's really only one of them 'cause VVM doesn't work, XT is by far the better network for the iPhone, in price, coverage and customer service.

At the moment I wouldn't sign up to anything though, not until after OS 4.0 is realeased, you know, just in case Apple does something stoopid like break the carrier bundles. I doubt they will, after all it was their website that said to buy from them and use on any network, but you never know. Maybe try it out with Prepaid, that way you can get out any time.

Thanks Dan, that's a good summary and pretty much what I was looking for. I will probably go prepaid, but Telecom do also have open term postpaid now.

We should know about 4.0 on Thursday I guess. Still have until Sunday (well, Saturday) to take advantage of unlimited TXT add-on.

Well, we'll know *about it* on Thursday, but unti the dev release is out we won't know whether they have blocked the carrier bundles.

At a guess (and a bit OT) they may also release some other OS updates before 4.0 comes out. They haven't done an update for sometime and apparently it is because the updates contain reference to the new product they are launching (read:tablet) and until they launch it no one can know about it. So don't be suprised if there is a .1 update sometime very soon (but after thursday) and then 4.0 later in the year.

The major risk is probably the warranty, You can't take it into a Vodafone or Telecom store to get it fixed.

I don't understand why there would be a warranty issue?

If you use XT you can still get it repaired under warranty, even with the carrier bundle installed. If you Jailbreak you would have to restore it first, if you couldn't restore then there would be an issue. But just installing the carrier bundle or an XT SIM makes no difference to the Warranty. Officially Jailbreaking does void your warranty but as long as you can restore before taking it for repair then that would not be an issue either. Yes there is the arguement that if they really wanted to find out if it had been jailbroken they could, but the chances of them doing that are probably pretty slim.

No-one said network reliability, did they? Less than 24 hours after switching to XT – BOOM!

But hey, I work in IT. Shit happens. From what I've heard Alcatel Lucent are having a really bad time, though Telecom could have added more redundancy.

And when it is working, I am seriously enjoying the data rates! Both dollars and bits per second.
