Hi,

I have a 3GS 32GB – running 3.1.3 – Telecom XT

I know that the new iOS 4 has a character counter for texts but im not ready to upgrade to

that yet as im a jailbreaker. But my question is, when i write a real long text message, what will

it do? Will it charge me extra? Or just charge me the amount of texts that it has to send? Just

wondering what will happen here..

Also, i run the Facebook app, will this try and update when im not connected to wifi? making me

use mobile internet?

Thanks, im new to the iphone and im sure these are basic questions :) Thanks alot

Hi Mick – I could be wrong but my understanding is that if your message goes over the standard SMS length of 160 characters you will be billed for a MMS.

No, you Facebook will not update in the background unless you have push notifications switched on.

From my experience on XT if you go over 160 characters it simply charges for another text, if it's extremely long. Seems to fail if it's more than about three texts length, ie doesn't seems to get received too well.

In regards to data usage on your iPhone, it WILL use data in general, the very design of the thing seems to use bits of data all over the place. My recommendation is: get over it and enjoy the experience. If you want to minimise your financial pain, sign up for the 500meg addon which you only pay for as you use it at 10c per Meg until you hit the $29.95 cap

if you are on a JB iPhone you can use SMS helper until you go onto IOS4. It gives you a better idea of what's happening.

Cheers for the replys guy.

Im currently just on the $1/day for 10MB, so ill see how that goes, have turned off push notifications for

my facebook app, so i sorted that out. Thats the only app i can think of that would use anything but time will

tell, but yeah like the above says, get over it and enjoy the experience. That sounds about good to me, im

leaving to Canada in 4-5 weeks time so ill worry about it once im over there and see what sort of usage plans

they have.

As far as the length of SMS goes, i have done a few tests and it seems it just charges you for how many it has to use

to send it, which is fine as im on the 2500 text plan and send about 1000 usually so thats no major for me, but something

that you might of wanted to know :) At least your not getting charged for a MMS like stated above and iv read other places

people have thought the same thing.
