I currently have a 3G iphone model number MB496X. I have been told that it won't be able to be connected to XT that I need a 3GS phone, is this correct?

That's not true. I've switched my iPhone 3G from Vodafone to XT and it all went through really smoothly. I just went into a Telecom shop and they did the rest including number porting so I could keep my Vodafone number and telling Vodafone to terminate my contract.
There are 2 things you need to know:
1) It won't work if your iPhone is locked. When I originally bought mine the guy in the Vodafone store unlocked it there and then using a special sim card. I would guess that the guys in the Telecom store could tell you if it is unlocked or not by sticking one of their sims in.
2) If you were on a 2 year Vodafone contract that hasn't ended yet there will be a termination fee to pay to Vodafone. In my case I calculated that it would only take me a few months of being on pre-pay XT to recoup that cost. (I have gone for the pre-pay option with the $12 data plan, they just deduct the $12 off my credit each month). This works great for me as I have low calls and text usage anyway. So all in it costs me around $15-$20 a month whereas Vodafone was $40 and that was with slow, mainly GPRS data (in Christchurch)
