Hi,
Since day one of having my 3GS and using XT I have the ongoing problem of getting errors of incorrect PIN entered when trying to access my voicemail. It seems to depend on where you are – I have never had success at work or at home but at times have had success in downtown Auckland City and out and about. I am living with it but wondered if others have experienced it. I am told it is to do with the way Apple implemented DTMP tones (long or short, can't remember)…
Problem is:
If you try to enter a PIN of "1234" it comes back and says "11223444 is not the correct PIN"
Other than that – and the odd text message delays (very random) I love the speed of iPhone on XT.

Same problem here and at least its not just me!
Very frustrating, but the helpdesk is quiet accomodating – think they're getting a few locked mailbox calls.
I'm on Freedom so now clear the voicemail from home and just call back the caller when on the road. Ain't a pretty workaround but hope they'll fix it soon.

Yeah this annoyed the hell out of me – in the end I called customer services and got them to get rid of the password altogether. If you need security, password the iphone itself…

I've just brought a iPhone 3GS and guess what. The PIN Problem has not gone away. The phone (or Telecom) has completely locked me out of my voice mail. I to am going to get rid of my voice mail pin!!

I have never had a voicemail pin issue until just recently (last 3 weeks). Same issues as described and darn annoying when locked out. However once locked out have never had to ring Telecom for a reset.
The only thing I changed in the last 3 weeks has been to turn data on permanently. I used to have the "Cellular Data" "APN" set to "internet.telecom.co." instead of "internet.telecom.co.nz". This stopped the iPhone using data by default, as I am usually near a wireless access point either at work or home.
So I proved conclusively on Wednesday that with "Cellular Data" enabled as per above, I can only occasionally get the correct pin. Further, if I turn it off I loose the nice gentleman's voice that asks for it, which I find very odd i.e. with data off dial voice mail get my name then nothing. I am not sure whats going on but it seems that either the iPhone has an issue (which I find hard to believe) OR the data connection some how interferes or interacts when the voicemail IVR is being used. It can not be the iPhone DTMF as we would not be able to manually dial numbers successfully if that were the case.
So to fix the problem and enable voicemail access "trouble free" disable the APN as above then reboot the phone. I have tried going flight mode then out of flight mode but even that does not work all the time. The reboot seems to be the only method that works 100% (at this point). It may be a pain to do this but it is better than have no access, being locked out or removing the pin security. I think with the pin removed anyone could access the voicemail from a landline (not sure on that one as don't use that access method anymore).
If the pin goes down the data connection (when data is on) then its an xt issue assuming Voda users don't have the same issue.
Also once I get the message saying I am locked out with data enabled and then turn data off and reboot the phone and try again, I don't get the message saying I am locked out and everything works fine. All very odd really!
Anyway at some point the real issue will come out of the wood work.
Hope this info can help someone.

just a bump on this thread…I got locked out yesterday. 3GS, XT…what a pain.
Anyone any further ahead on this, or as there haven't been posts on this in a while have I missed the solution for it?
Cheers
edit:
it seems the issue dare I say it is our precious iphone…at least that is the conclusion held by some on the apple forum
http://discussions.apple.com/m…..ID=6856277
Seems the iphone only sends long tones with no way to tell it to only send short tones. Line quality being what it is, the long tones are often distorted and broken into chunks, hence interpreted as multiple key inputs.

Best solution is remove the PIN from your voicemail. Let's face it, if you've got a lock code on your iPhone you don't really need one on your voicemail too.

I find just tapping the numbers works best as opposed to holding down the number. I also press the hash key after my pin as this speeds things up. Maybe try doing more of a 'tap' than a 'press'

Dan thanks for the info. Just tried both methods to test and neither caused an issue.
Dialled voicemail and tapped keypad (short DTMF) and got through OK.
Dialled voicemail and held each number key of the pin down for 2 seconds (long DTMF) and got through OK.
The location I am testing from has always been very problematic i.e. never got a succesful VM access with data on. The conclusions I have at present are;
1/ Its an iPhone issue.
2/ Its an XT network channel quality issue i.e. noise network load etc.
3/ Its the voice mail service i.e. noise, faulty codec issue etc.
4/ Its none of the above.
To disprove/prove the DTMF issue I will put in another IVR number into my contacts and dial that when the Telecom voice mail IVR fails me.
The thing that still bothers me is that I have had NO voice mail DTMF issues with data off. However as it is OK at present its going to be a time thing.

Last weekend (Saturday) I responded to a voicemail as I have done in the past with problems and without problems. Most of my VM use is during the day at work (Wellington CBD) and since my last post I have had many VM's and had no pin issues, until last weekend at home (Hutt Valley). Data has been enabled all the while.
I checked the VM and got the usual wrong pin problem. So I checked another IVR (twice) which goes 3 levels deep by key press, and had no problem at all with that IVR. The IVR used for comparison test was NOT the Telecom mobile IVR. I turned off data and tried Telecom VM twice more and on both my pin still failed and then VM told me it was locked.
Rebooted my phone with data off and tried VM again, still locked! (hmmm dam me thought this is different so will have to ring Telecom). Decided work was not that important in the weekend so did not call Telecom faults and left data off as at home I use wireless.
On Sunday I tried VM again, just for the hell of it, and it worked lock gone.
Conclusion: there are external factors that cause this issue i.e. if it was the iPhone then it would be unlikely to go for long periods with out issue. I don't know what the problem is (obviously) or why its so infrequent now, but for me its a sigh of relief. From reading on the web there does not appear to be any verifiable issues on the iPhone with PB. The items I have read to date are either user error or terminating equipment issues confused as iPhone problems.
I believe on the initial call you make i.e. dialing a number the digits are sent ENBLOC but in the case of the IVR's they are or have to be inband and therefore PB. I do not know how the XT network controls the mobile device so am still curious as to why when the problem occurs (for me) its only ever with data on i.e. does the XT ask the phone to send the pin over the data link if data is on?
Therefore I update my previous list.
2/ Its an XT network channel quality IP backhaul issue i.e. noise network load etc.
3/ Its the Telecom voice mail service i.e. noise, faulty codec issue etc.
