Hi – you may be aware that when you update your iPhone via iTunes 9 to OS3.1 you lose the ability to use the phone as a modem for mobile broadband. I did this unwittingly some weeks ago and have been frustrated with the lack of response from either Telecom or Apple on when this would get resolved. I bought the iPhone on a Vodafone plan but was persuaded back to the XT network by Telecom. I also got rid of my T-stick as I had a plan with broadband included for the iPhone and knew I could use it for this purpose. I travel a lot and really need to have mobile broadband so you can imagine how frustrating it became. Fortunately, my Vodafone plan included free broadband for three months so I was swapping out my SIMs to still use the phone for broadband but this has now ended.

So, reluctantly I started looking for ways to get back to tethering with Telecom and was lucky enough to find this site and its instructions for how to do this.

Unfortunately I believe this has involved 'jailbreaking' my phone using the blackra1n software but desperate times mean desperate measures! I have now got tethering back and posted this message via my iPhone. The process was incredibly painless in that I simply installed blackra1n, installed the sn0w application on my phone and it reset and voila! It may have been that because I had already installed the carrier bundle from this site that I didn't have to change any other settings as that is all I have done. I will post an update after a few days if I have any further problems but am really pleased to be back in the world of mobile broadband via XT as the Vodafone's mobile broadband is sooooo sloooow!

Cheers

Tony

Hi Tony

Welcome to the site – thanks for posting.

This topic is a bit of a hot potato on the site and has already been discussed extensively – just type 'tethering' into the search box on the site. In particular, the comments on this post discuss the method you mention: http://www.iphonewzealand.co.n…..tethering/

Thanks again

Steve

Thanks – I had searched previously and had not found specific instructions for how to get tethering back but saw from the link that someone had posted a solution. Still think the whole thing stinks as I shouldn't have to try dodgy solutions to use my phone for mobile broadband – I have always had it with any phone I had on the Telecom network. I bought the iPhone as it was going to be my all-in-one device and I could get rid of the ipod, t-stick and mobile (plus it is incredibly cool) only to find I was looking at getting another t-stick for travel. I will use this solution until Apple & Telecom sort this out.

Sorry to discuss jailbreaking outside of the jailbreakig forum, but this a direct response to Tony's message.

Do you have a 3G or a 3GS? Be aware that if you have an iPhone 3GS that contains the newer bootrom then jailbreaking with blackra1n may be a "tethered jailbreak", which means whenever you restart your iPhone you have to connect it to your PC and run blackra1n again.

You'll know if this effects you by restarting your iPhone, if it boots into DFU recovery mode then you know it's a tethered jailbreak.

It's actually not a Telecom issue, it's an Apple issue. Telecom are more than happy for you to use Tethering but Apple won't allow it on any unofficial carriers. Until Telecom become an official carrier it's unlikely to happen without Jailbreaking.

You could argue that Telecom should have said it wouldn't work, but at the time of the promo it did and also Telecom at no stage said that all the features would work. Even Apple state that not all the features are available on all carriers and that you should check with your carrier.

If it restarted correctly after one reboot it must be a non-tethered jailbreak. My understanding is that if it's a tethered jailbreak you need to re-jailbreak everytime you restart it – so there would be no doubt :)

iPhonewzealand do not support Jailbreaking. Please take any discussion related to Jailbreaking to the sticky in the General forum.

I have un-jailbroken my iPhone and I still get tethering on 3.1.2 so, It works for me. I'm not sure about others.
