Bad call quality on GPRS

Hi,

I just recently changed to Vodafone from Telecom on my iPhone 3G. As I understand, iPhone 3G's aren't compatible on the Vodafone extended 3G 900MHz network so when I'm not in a major town my phone steps down to the GPRS network. This is fine exept my calls are exceptionally bad, I can only just hear the other person and the other person can't hear me at all. Calls are fine if I'm within range of the 2100MHz network.

I was just wondering if this was an easily fixed problem or whether it is some sort of hardware issue (my phone isn't in the best condition…)

Thanks.
