Hi, My fiance just arrived from OZ and is going to get an iPhone. I am on vodafone with my work contract, so probably going to get one on Vodafone for her too.

I am just wondering if we are better off getting it on an iPhone plan, with the subsidy, or buying it outright and then using it on prepay? Of course it depends on her usage, but she is a pretty high data user and I am not sure that the 250megs on the iPhone plan is going to be enough for her, and we can get 200megs for only $20 per month on prepay.

What are people's thoughts on this ?

thanks.

There are so many variables here but a big one I guess is are you both planning on staying here or do you think you my be going back to Oz to live at some stage? If you think you may be going back over there then I would buy outright so you are not tied into a plan for 2 years.

As for the actual plans I will let someone else answer who is on Vodafone

I am an extremely heavy data user but I make it through the month on 250megs on the iPhone 40 plan. I have switched to XT now as coverage wasn't great in my area but iPhone 40 is the way to go.

If you have ready access to wifi connections (home, work) you won't need a very large data plan. I have a 240Mb on XT and I'm comfortably within it's limits without having to check my usage every second.
If, on the other hand, you're on the road or have to use your phone as a modem, or listen to internet radio or any kind of similar data usage – more Mb = :)

Democracy is two wolves and a sheep voting on what to have for dinner. Liberty is two wolves attempting to have a sheep for dinner and finding a well-informed, well-armed sheep.

Xescuy is right. I'm on the same plan as him and I'm a heavy user but I get through the month with wifi

Buy outright if you can afford it, there is nothing flash about the iPhone plans on Vodafone $3000 dollars a year does your mobile bill normally cost you that?

I just signed my wife up for a VF iPhone $40 month plan and both of us have received a $75 credit on each of our accounts, it's a special they have going at the moment called "refer a friend" and family members are eligible!

I figure the iPhone $40 plan is good value, I calculated that my wife was spending nearly $40 month in prepay anyway, so she'll still be spending that much on a plan (less the $75 credit), plus she gets the iPhone4 for only $619 (16GB, Smart1 plan) compared to paying $1123 outright from Apple. The only downside is being locked into the plan for 24 months, but that's acceptable for us…time flies when you're having fun on your iPhone!

Regarding the 250MB data, I do a fair bit of emailing, web surfing, & downloading during the month and not once in 12 months on my iPhone plan have I gone over 250megs. All depends on the user and what they are downloading I suppose, if it's movies & music than you will chew through data heaps quicker, best to download that stuff when you are home on your wi-fi connection methinks.
