Buying ePub files to import into iBooks?

Hi all,

I've just started playing around with iBooks, and (as has been well mentioned on this site) have been quite disappointed by the lack of selection on the NZ iBooks store. That being said, I've had a play with the Stanza and Kindle apps, and prefer the "feel" of iBooks.

Other sites such as Amazon, Kobo, etc. have a great selection of eBooks available, but seem to require me to read the eBook on each store's dedicated app, rather than letting me downloading an ePub file and importing this into iBooks.

Does anyone happen to know any eBook stores which allow you to download the ePub and import it directly into iBooks? Smile

Hi there,

I am not able to answer your question specifically… Let me explain…

I have bought many e-Books (e-Pub being my preferred format) from a website called http://www.booksonboard.com however upon purchase they provide a download link which opens with Adobe Digital Editions.  The e-Book actually downloads to that application.

Once in Adobe Digital Aditions I simply locate the actual eBook file and perform a little *cough* "magic" to the file which renders it available to be put on my iPad – either by dragging and dropping into iTunes or dragging and dropping into the file drop box for another reader app such as Stanza.

As this method works well for me I haven't looked into sites to purchase books and have them load directly onto the iPad.

I live in Christchurch though, and our public library allows you to have iBooks on temporary loan and they do load directly onto the iPad via an app called Overdrive.

Hope some of this info is useful…

Hi,

Personally i am an eReader fan and all was going well until they locked down the countries.

I did try going the Stanza approach that NZ_Ark uses but the "magic" was all a bit much for me.

I found a programme called BlueFire Reader and I use the Whittcoulls or Books on Board or … websites to purchase ePub books, then instead of downloading the books I copy the shortcut to the link and email it to the iPhone I want the ebook on (mine or Hubbies) that way he only sees the ones he might want to read.

In the email app click on the link and it starts to take you to the web, and then comes up asking what programme you want to open in BlueFire or …. (depending on what is on the iPhone), select BlueFire and it begins downloading.

Since Whittcoulls is powered by Kobo I imagine you will be able to copy the download link in a similar way from their site (not one I have tried).

Once it is in BlueFire it is available to save to your computer via the link under iTunes, I like to save the files as a backup, just in case.  Once you have the file saved on your computer I guess you could import it into iBooks, but I haven't tried, BlueFire does the job well enough.

And of course the library via Overdrive is great, but I sometimes the time limit is a bit of a pain depending what you are doing at the time besides reading :)

Happy reading

On a rather sad note I have to report that Stanza is not compatible with iOS 5 and will spit the dummy in a major way giving all sorts of unhandled errors and the like…  From doing a bit of googling it appears the general consensus is that it may never be updated (google to find out why…).  I do hope it does though.  I already miss it!
