I just saw an ad for this on jbhifi's new catalogue.
pricing:
device only $1344
on smart3: $897
on smart 4: $447
on smart 5: $297
I am assuming this will be the European version as opposed to the NA version as the smart plans include texts and calling minutes.

Less about Vodafone and more about Samsung's pricing on the hardware (and buy price to carriers). Talk to them about why the things to expensive, but at $1,399.00 retail it's priced itself out of the market (which is reflected in Samsung's sales forecasts for the device being halved).

Wait until the 10 inch model comes out next year. It will either see an adjustment of the 7 current tab pricing (forcing the price of the Samsung Galaxy S smartphone down aswell) or it will end up in he white elephant price range and get killed by anything else.
