My iPhone has recently started using data when not in use. I run the phone with all the settings turned off as a norm…..but today I even deleted all my apps…..turned off Enable 3G and Cellular Data……reset the phone and it still uses data. I get 3 gig a month and the new month started 7 days ago…….I have 292m/b left!!!! I rang my provider Vodafone today and they ran me through the usual checks and everything is as it should be…OFF. I have got them to turn off my Data from there end until this is sorted out…….Does anyone have any suggestions?

I'm guessing a restore to factory settings may be in order…but….. I have videos of family in my "camera roll" which I dont want to lose…..How do I transfer them to my PC?

Hey,

Not sure about the data usage… To transfer your images you should be able to just plug it in then go to my computer, and your phone should be showing there.  Just open it up and copy the folder over to your pc.

As stated plug your phone into your computer and pull the photos and video off.

As far as the data goes, to use nearly 3GB in 7 days is terrible. You would have had shocking battery life over those few days if you were using all that data.

Did you have mobileme, or some other cloudservice  or location app which could have been constantly using data in the background. Google's Latitude app is pretty data hungry as are many other apps. Remember iPhones now do multitasking so an app doesn't have to be open to use data it just has to be running in the background.

To see what is running in the background, double tap the home button and you'll see the multitasking bar. To kill an app which is running in the background, hold any app in the multitasking bar till they wiggle, then tap the (-) in the corner of the app icon.

Another possibility is tethered data usage, were you plugging the phone into your PC at night? There is a chance the PC could use the phones data connection instead of your broadband.

Or.

If you have hotspot enabled, someone else might be using the data at night. Not that likely, but possible

There are stacks of possibilities. Good luck.

Something else to be aware of is email, although nearly 3GN in 7 days is a bot extreme, you will always use data with email.

I am not sure about this next theory of mine so maybe someone could confirm/deny this, but I believe even if you have Mobile Data/3G switched off your device will still use data for apps that require it. This is because the device thinks it needs to check something (requiring the use of data) and so it sends out a ping/data packet. When mobile data is switched off it gets no response and so that's the end of the 'transaction', but that packet it tries to send out still use a small amount of data (although very tiny). If you have email that is set to fetch or another service/app that is set to check something then it maybe that which is using data.

This is just a theory of mine and I could be completely incorrect in this but just check you have nothing set up that may want to use data, i.e. emails.

Something else you could check is the Usage details in 'Settings – Usage'. You could reset that and then see what happens on a daily basis and keep track of every thing you do on your iPhone.

Thanks for you feedback. I can copy my pics over to my computer no problem at all……its the videos I've taken on my camera roll that won't go over. Is this an iPhone thing or something I'm not doing right. I really need to get them off my phone as I want to do a full restore to factory settings. cheers

It's probably your image transfer software that is only picking up the jpegs. Just go in via explorer looking at the phone as a drive while it's plugged in and you should be able to drag and drop or select/cut/paste the videos to where ever you want on your computer.
