I have discovered the hard way that in NZ when you buy a ringtone from the "Ringtones" department of the iTunes store, the option to actually make a ringtone from your purchase (Store: Create ringtone) is apparently not available outside the USA. My iPhone is not jailbroken, and is fully updated as is my iMac. Does anyone know a straightforward way to convert my honestly purchased ringtones into usable items? Or am I just sadder and wiser now with some junk "music" in my library?

I use .mp3 files for all my music in my iTunes library and to make a ring tone within iTunes is quite easy.
First listen to what ever file you want to use and work out the start
and stop times for the section of music you want to use for your
ringtone.
Right click on the music file and select "Get info" go to the options
tab, fill the "Start Time" and "Stop Time" you want to use then close
the "Get Info" window.
Right click on the music file and select "Create AAC Version" iTunes
will use your preset start and stop times when converting the file.
Navigate to the folder where the file was created and change its file
type from .mpa to .mpr and your ringtone is done. Click on it to open it
with iTunes and it will be placed in your ringtone folder.
Don't forget to go back and remove the start and stop times from the original file when you are finished.

just remember that you can only have a 30 second piece of the music not the whole song. else it wont work.

Also try out Audiko.net — lets you either upload an MP3 and convert it to iPhone ringtone which you then download and import to your iTunes library, or lets you input a YouTube URL for a song you want to use, it will then rip the sound, let you specify the start-and-stop, and turn it into a ringtone. Awesome site.

If you are a Mac user you can import an audio file into garageband and then export it as an iphone ringtone file.

Oh I'm so pleased I found this! New to the world of iPhones and was pretty disappointed wiht the ringtones, but wasn't sure how to go about getting new ones.
That audiok.net site is fantastic! I've just made a couple of ringtones up. I love it!
Now, if we could just get it to work for text tones I'd be happy too.
